  1. Hi there I'm trying to get myself into a situation where I can work interchangeably between desktop and laptop setups -- e.g. freely transfer Logic projects between them. Big problem is I have a lot of Kontakt (non-player) instruments. On the mobile setup, I'm running my libraries from a Samsung T3 drive, and on the desktop setup I run my libraries partly from disk and partly from an external hard disk. All my VIs that are Player instruments or proper VI installs know where to find their samples on the laptop setup, since specifying this was part of their installation process. But for non-player instruments, as far as I can tell I need to point Kontakt to the samples each time I transfer a file between desktop and laptop setups (for various reasons, including a bizarre very limited character restriction on the name you can give to the T3 drive, it's not possible for me to replicate the paths of the samples as they are in the original projects on the laptop setup). I tried a batch resave of one of the libraries on the laptop set up this afternoon, hoping that this would make Kontakt 'get the memo' about where it would look for those samples when I open a project on the laptop set up using them, but this didn't seem to make a difference. I find it hard to believe there isn't a solution for this but I can't think of anything -- any advice much appreciated. Cheers!
  2. Great -- thanks very much for the info! Much appreciated.
  3. Hi I am currently planning to purchase a new machine with 8GBs of RAM -- a 4GB increase from my current setup. While I plan to move to Logic Pro X at some point, I'm currently mid-project on several things on Logic 9 so don't plan to do so immediately. However, am I correct in thinking that Logic 9, not being 64-bit, is unable to take advantage of RAM loads over 4GBs? I remember reading this somewhere but am not sure how relaible it was. Cheers!
  4. Thanks David. I'm aware that it's a major shortfall in my knowledge but I work on a limited budget and try to spend on sounds and samples rather than mastering plug-ins etc -- usually I'm lucky in that the companies I work for do it for me, and I don't usually get any complaints from the POV of the mixes themselves. I suppose what I find puzzling is that a limiter could fail to do what it's there to do -- limit the signal output -- and there's no obvious reason why; you just have to keep experimenting until you find a way to keep it down. It's not a problem I have with, say, reverb plug-ins! Is there any freeware limiting plug-ins anyone would recommend over Logic's own? I'd like to at least have something to compare it with... Cheers! Juda$ -- Thanks, I'll give 'em a try.
  5. I should probably mention I'm a Logic Express User, so only have access the Logic Limiter. The message I'm getting is that one instance probably isn't enough, right? So I should try two or more instances and see if it helps. BTW, just better ask the question: if I' m trying to boost the RMS level in a track, in this the best way to go about it, short of going back and remixing?
  6. Yes, they are. I'm using the fader on the metering plug in to bring up the overall levels (it's up to about 3dB), but as I do that the peaks are jumping over -3dB, up to about -0.5dB. I haven't set any of the fine controls on the limiter, but I tried to before and they didn't seem to make much difference.
  7. Hi! It's a different channel strip. I've got the limiter on track channel and meter plug in on the master channel, Thanks!
  8. Hi Please forgive what will probably sound like a stupid question, but I am currently being asking to play the role of mastering engineer, for which I'm entirely unprepared! I'm trying to user a limiter to enable me to raise the RMS levels of a track to about -12dB track without making the peaks exceed -3dB. So, I have the Logic limiter on my stereo mix channel, with output level set to -3dB. I have Sonalkis Free G RMS/peak meter on my master channel but am still get peaks above -3dB. I thought a limiter, by definition, prevented that. What do I need to do to ensure peaks don't exceed -3dB?
  9. Hi I'm trying to cut some tracks to specific lengths, but for some reason the start of the first bar in Logic is registering as being four seconds and however many milliseconds into the track so far as the time counter is concerned so all the times are out by four and a bit seconds. Very irritating and I can't work out why. Is this a bug or is some setting that needs adjusting? Any help greatly appreciated -- I'm on a deadline! Thanks ST
  10. Thanks -- that's a great help! I don't know -- they produce compilation CDs and I guess they want to make sure everyone is sending in tracks with roughly the same dynamic range? Or is it just a precaution against over compression/peaking? Great -- thanks! On the level metre, when I select RMS, the values displayed at the side seem to still be the peak values -- considerably higher than the RMS. Is that right? Thanks again.
  11. Hi Hoping someone can help me. Just got a mastering instruction from someone. They want a track mastered to "max. -12dB RMS-Level (a dynamic range of 12dB) -- Peak-Level at -0.3 dB. Have to confess, I'm not on very firm ground. I can guess at how to achieve this but it would just be a guess. How, in Logic, do I go about making sure my tracks correspond to those instructions? Any help gratefully appreciated!
  12. Hi there I have a whole bunch of VST plug-ins from my Cubase days I want to be able to use in Logic 9.... So, problem is the ONLY VST-AU wrapper that exists as far as I can see is FXpansion -- which has a heftier price tag on it than I thought it would. Are there any others at all? I guess I would be willing to pay it, but I'm worried about comments I've seen regarding Intel/PPC compatibility. I have Steinberg Virtual Guitarist and Halion Strings among other that I'm particularly keen to use -- but these were made in the days of pre-Intel Macs and I'm now using an Intel Mac. So, does anyone know if there's an issue wrapping these plug-ins because of this? And any alternatives for VST-AU plugin wrapping generally?
  13. Ah.. I just found the realtime option. It appears to work. I'm a bit miffed at yet another 'quirk' with PLAY, but at this stage there's so many variables - latest version of Logic, Snow Leopard and PLAY -- that it could be any one of them. Thanks for your help.
  14. Hi there. I recently made a switch to Logic 9, having hung on to Cubase for rather a long time. It's going okay so far, but I don't really know what's 'under the hood' when things start to go wrong. I recently puchased East West Goliath with the infamous (apparently) PLAY Engine. While it is very unstable the sounds are good and I haven't lost any work with it yet ( it tends to crash on file start up rather than during). However, I've just tried bouncing audio -- and it's a mess. Not only does it clip, but actually it seems to go off in to error territory bouncing the wrong notes. I am suspicious of the speed with which Logic bounces. I'd much rather it did an online bounce and took longer -- the playback of the instruments is absolutely fine; even with 6 or 7 of them playing. iI's just when I try to get them into audio that things go wrong. Is there an option to do an online bounce in Logic 9? Has anyone else had this problem with a PLAY instrument?
