  1. The cpu is definitely important and the imac is definitely winning on the gHz front. What I’m asking I guess is will it outperform in large VI sessions with a higher clock speed with fewer cores? Will it outperform when bouncing and replacing all tracks? Etc. Re graphics cards. I’m paying for a graphics card I don’t need on the iMac too, if we assume the one in my 2012 MBP is fine, so that doesn’t seem like something that is specifically a con for the Mac Pro line. I’ve found out it is a D300 in the Mac pros I listed, so it is the cheapest one available anyway. With further research it seems like the imac has faster ram (DDR4 vs DDR3) a faster clock speed but fewer cores, limited to 64gb ram not 128 and is not portable. Does the ram’s speed affect anything when using heavy VI sessions? Thanks again!
  2. Hi all, I'm using a 2012 'classic' macbook pro, which has served me well, but I'm running out of power, can't open some projects due to a RAM limit - all the usual issues with older machines! I've held off upgrading for so long with the hopes that there would be a 32gb RAM Apple laptop out, but there isn't and my hand is being forced! I do a lot of on-site work for composers, so the laptop has always been the most helpful option as I can go to them, and be there at studio sessions with a printable rig. However about 40% of my work is now at my home studio and I can work from there if needed! I won't be able to be at the recording session with a desktop necessarily though. The sort of sessions I'm struggling to run are large orchestral VI sessions with lots of plugins being made on a 12 core 2013 Mac Pro. That leaves me with either getting an iMac or a Mac Pro. The old cheesegraters don't stack up according to my research using geekbench. Although they can hold their own single and multi-core wise, the cost isn't cheaper and it doesn't have thunderbolt and could be unsupported at any point. If it was half the price, then maybe, but it isn't. It's also definitely not portable! Looking at Geek Bench, the iMac 2017 4.2 i7 and the 6-8 core Mac Pro 2013s are in roughly the same zone, both financially and power house wise. Here's a screenshot of geekbench: Obviously the iMac trounces the mac pro on single core, but Logic X is very much multi core supported and the 8 core mac pro still wins even after 4 years. I can get all 3 discounted: Mac Pro 2013 - 6 core, 1tb SSD, 64gb RAM - £3,115 Mac Pro 2013 - 8 core, 1tb SSD, 64gb RAM - £3,445 iMac 2017 - i7 4.2gHz, 1tb SSD, 64gb RAM, Radeon 580 - £3,496.33 (iMac inc thunderbolt 3 adapter, keyboard with numpad) All 3 have a 3 year warranty with their shops. I'm torn. Mac Pro 2013 is more portable but is 4+ years old, the iMac has fan issues (due to i7 being so hot) and isn't as portable! I have screens already and could travel with the Mac Pro if needed, but the iMac is 2017 tech so should be supported for longer. Is the single core iMac result worth it overall? Or would I be happier with an 8 core Mac Pro that will fit in a backpack if needed? Help!
  3. Hi all, I've been helping a friend move their logic content off their main disk drive, and have been thinking that I've got all the locations, but I don't seem to be as their internal drive has gotten smaller since we installed a few sample packs. They're down to 20gb internal now, so we're hesitant to keep downloading! I've used symlinks instead of aliases and have checked both the User and HDD Library folders. They're on El Capitan though and I'm on Mavericks, so I don't know if there's been a move of where I think they're installed to where they actually are being installed!! (I also upgraded from Logic 9 on Leopard and my machine hasn't had a fresh install since then - so it's a bit of a mess) Is there a list of locations that we need to move that anyone has that could help us please? Ideally anything logic related will be on this separate drive so that the small internal drive stays as free as possible..! Thanks very much. Jonik
  4. Hi, I'm wondering if it is possible for the channel strip saves I'm doing to include the reverb sends and bus sends (instead of stereo out it goes to bus 15, say). I use a template so having this ability would be great, and won't be different across my settings. Is it possible for this to happen? Thanks very much, Jonik
  5. No luck? I'll probably end up making a separate but linking Chanel Strip for each loop - but it would have been nice to have had it done automatically!
  6. Hi, I'm making some apple loops out of audio I've recorded, and my first batch included the plugins I've used. They worked ok, but things like delay don't work well when looping back around. So, it has occurred to me that creating the loops dry with channel strip settings applied automatically on loading of the apple loop would solve this and allow for tweaking down the line. I've seen multiple references to this being possible in the manual, but having not managed to get it to work I'm wondering whether this feature is limited to the MIDI loops and not the audio loops too. Is this correct? If not, and it should be possible, where might I be going wrong? Ideally I want to find the dry loop in the loop library, and when dragged into the session a new track containing the correct channel strip is created. Thanks very much! Jonik
  7. Bump - any chance that resetting the new devices popup is possible? Thanks!
  8. That sounds like it would be great, only I can't get it to give me the notification that a new device has been plugged in. Is there a way to get it to do that so we can set it up automatically? Thanks!
  9. No one in the same boat as us I take it? Any rough pointers that we could take a look at?
  10. Hi, I've been trying to help a friend get their Oxygen 25 (new version) working in Logix X, but whenever we add it as a control surface it stops outputting MIDI and the knobs/pads stop working too. They're running the very latest Logic X and El Capitan, due to having auto updates on. The Oxygen 25 is class compliant, so works without being set up as a control surface, but this then doesn't seem to use the full functionality of the keybaord. However, installing direct link (as per below link) stops it working at all! The software (directlink) doesn't show up for anything past 10.9.5... might that be a reason? http://www.m-audio.com/support/drivers-search Has anyone got one of these working on Logic X 10.2+ on El Capitan? Thanks very much, Jonik
  11. Hi, I'm trying to work out a way of quickening the lining up of audio that has gone through outboard. In the pic attached, there are 3 tracks of audio which have been printed (there's at least 5 in my current session but that seemed like overkill). The track which lines up with bar 29 has printed completely digitally, and is exactly right. The one above and below have both gone to 2 different pieces of outboard effects and been printed back in. Logic seems to do PDC very well, but I don't think it does external delay at all? (It'd be impressive if it could keep track of half a dozen different pieces of outboard but I'm going off topic) I have measured these delays and found they are consistently 19ms, 21ms, 20ms and 40ms depending on the outboard used (4 different stems with 4 different pieces of outboard) as long as I stay at 256 sample buffer. This of course increases at a higher buffer rate but I rarely change from 256. My question is, is there a way I can create a shortcut of some way to nudge these back into place? Secondly, once this is done, what would be the best method to 'consolidate' each wav audio so that it'll snap to this new position in a different DAW such as Pro Tools? Thanks very much Jonik
  12. Hi, I've got a midi controller that I've programmed to work with the slate VMR plugins, so that I have control over each knob and button - including bypassing the individual units within the plugin. However, when I try to program it so that one of my MIDI controller buttons bypasses the current track's VMR plugin (all of which are on the first row), I come into a bit of a weird thing.... it bypasses the plugin on row 2 instead. I've tried this multiple times, but it consistently bypasses plugin #2 instead - is there something that means I can't do this with row 1? Thanks! Jonik
  13. Yup. I can't help thinking it's a 10.2.0 thing - to stop us from using older versions...
  14. I've just tried it again following the above just in case I made a mistake before - but what happens is when I click on the 'Change All' button, and enter my password, it jumps back to 10.2.0. Logic is closed throughout this. :-/
  15. That's ok, thanks for trying! Jonik
