  1. Thanks for the advice Eric, it's good to know that I can get better performance even from the lesser spec'd Macs. I think the raw specs confuse me, as the processor speeds are not much different to my old machine - which has 2.7 GHz dual core i7 processor, whereas the newer 13" seem to have single core i5. The newer 15" have dual or quad core i7. Maybe it is the internal bus speeds and quicker memory access that I presume the new machines will have that is the most important point. Any views on whether a desk top Mac is better value? (i.e. in terms of performance vs. cost)? Thanks for the link on the docking station. That looks really good! It will be great for hooking up an extra monitor too. Cheers
  2. Hi guys, I have a 6 year old MacBook Pro and I'm thinking of upgrading it. I've beefed it up a bit over the years from its original spec, so it is quite capable, but it does run a bit slow on some large Logic Pro X projects - especially when Rewired to Reason 10 and there are a lot of tracks and plugins. I have looked at the base specifications of what's on offer with the new 13" and 15" inch MacBook Pros and the specs don't seem to be much better than my old Mac. Maybe I'm missing something. Here is the spec of my existing Mac, as shown in "about this Mac": 13" Early 2011; 1 Processor, 2 cores, 2.7GHz Intel Core 7; L2 cache 256K; L3 cache 4MB; Memory: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3; Startup Disk: 1TB SSD; Graphics 3000 512MB. Running Yosemite (10.10.5) because the next upgrade in OS would not work with some of my old outboard gear. When I look at the specs of the 2017 MacBooks, it seems I have to go for a 15 model to even get close to the specs of my old Mac - hence my confusion. Can anyone help suggest my best bang for the buck? Here in Australia it seems I need to spend around $4,000 for the top of line 15" MacBook Pro, and that only comes with a 500 GB SSD. I have around 750GB of data on my existing 1TB drive, so I'd at least need to upgrade to a bigger hard drive (although I could probably move some data to an external USB drive). I'm not ruling out getting a desktop Mac if that worked out to be better spec/value for money, as it will sit in my studio. My audio interface is an Allen & Heath ZED R16, which uses a Firewire interface, but I believe that I could still run that from a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter - is that right? Allen & Heath update their drivers regularly, so I expect it will work with current OS (unlike my UA1000, but that's another story). Thanks for any upgrade suggestions!! Cheers, Cliff
  3. Is it possible to listen to all previous takes while looping ("sound on sound") in Logic? Logic seems to automatically mute the previous takes while recording in a loop, which is what you would normally want. I'd like to find a way to simulate a guitar loop pedal, in Logic. Each pass through the loop would allow another layer to be built up. Thanks for any help guys.
  4. I forgot to say that when I installed both Logic Express 9 and Logic Pro 9 I just went with the default folder structure. I've been digging around a bit in Finder, and from what I can see it looks like Logic Pro 9 was installed fully "stand alone" and does not share any of the Logic Express plugins. I am hopeful that I can simply uninstall LE 9 without messing up anything in my newly installed Logic Pro 9, but would appreciate confirmation if anyone has done this. I am guessing there would be quite a few new converts to Logic Pro 9 wondering the same thing?
  5. I have just installed Logic Pro 9 from the Apple store, and downloaded the optional extra content. I think that I might as well uninstall logic express 9, which I installed from a CD. Are there any traps I should watch out for? I want to make sure I delete anything that is duplicated for Logic Pro (I'm not sure if any of the content is duplicated), and make sure I don't delete any shared content or previous projects. I think all I need to do is drag the Logic Express 9 icon from Finder into the Trash. Is that right? Thanks for any help.
  6. Use the menu option quoted by David. Then you may need to click on the little "Advanced" disclosure triangle to reveal the horizontal reliability BPM lanes.
  7. Sounds like this problem:? The track is solo-safed (http://documentation.apple.com/en/logicpro/usermanual/index.html#chapter=27%26section=8%26tasks=true bottom of the page). Control-click it to un-solo-safe it
  8. OK sorry I posted in the wrong forum before. Anyway I have solved this now. The problem was caused by Logic being run in 32 bit mode and Reason 6 now defaulting to 64 bit mode. On my system rewire now works fine as long as I remember to open Reason and Logic in the same mode. I ran them successfully in both 32 and 64 bit mode. (The trick is to make sure the applications are closed and then locate them in Finder, and choose "Get Info". Then you can tick open in 32 bit).
  9. Is anyone able to confirm if Reason 6 works OK with Logic 9 under Lion OS? I was not having any problem with rewire for Reason 5 & Record, but I updated to Reason 6 last night and can't get it to work as a rewire slave. I will also check over on the Reason forum.
  10. That's because you have a track/channel strip soloed somewhere. Solo one track then Option+Click its Solo button to Unsolo all tracks. Hey thanks for the fast reply!! Yes that worked. Strange that none of my tracks showed they were solo'd, but I did what you said and solo one channel and Option + Click and all is back to normal. Appreciate the help!
  11. Sorry for the newbie question guys Somehow I managed to get Logic into a state where all of the mute buttons are flashing, and the only way I can hear any of my tracks is to solo them. If no tracks are solo'd then nothing is playing. How do I get back to normal with no flashing mute buttons? Not sure if I explained this very well, so let me know if more info needed.
  12. I think Logic is compatible, but make sure the drivers for your audio interface are rated for Lion. I have an Allen & Heath ZED R16 which unfortunately is not yet usable with Lion. Fortunately I have another interface that works OK with Lion. I've heard that quite a few manufacturers are slow at getting out the Lion updates for their drivers.
  13. I get exactly the same problems with Lion and ZED R16 drivers. Luckily my Edirol UA-1000 works well, so at least I have a working audio interface. I hope Allen & Heath won't take too long to release Lion drivers.
  14. Thanks for the reply. You are right! I had to run Garageband, and then it gave me an option to download Garageband samples and loops. There were about 1.2 GBytes to download. I thought they were all included in OSX as standard, but this isn't the case. Now the Logic Express instruments all seem to play properly. The strange thing is that the missing instruments and samples were not listed under "Garageband" (as some of the instruments are) in the EXS24 menu.
