  1. Right, right, of course. Will give that a try. This whole question reminded me of something I have been pondering a while, maybe not related, but the article posted above on binaural panning brought it to mind again. I have a cordless stereo recorder that I have put out into the woods to record birds in the morning. Its amazing how well you can place those sounds listening later. Even on just stereo speakers, some are clearly closer, farther away, above, or below, even seem to be behind you in a huge 3D audio field. I've wondered if there is a way to approximate that in mixing. Well done, you could make it sound like you are sitting in the middle of an orchestra, with the various instruments all around you. Or sitting on a stage with a band, hearing the guitar player wander around the stage. Its fascinating to me what creates that illusion of distance and closeness, and I know its not just reverb, its eq, reflections, all kinds of things. I can imagine a mixing/mastering plug-in that's laid out like a canvas, where you place various sounds. I have one actually, its called Dear RealityVR, and it does that--sort of, but not near with the kind of resolution and detail I hear with my woods recordings. And you can never get the sound that far away, like a huge outdoor scape, 6 blocks away or more--miles? (think distant train). Experiments with EQ and reverb to me do that in a clumsy sort of way, not truly realistic. Just wondering if you know of anything already here or coming out of R&D that would make that kind of mixing easy--not trying to automate or set a whole collection of parameters, but ready to go out of the box, placing sounds exactly where you want them, and-- made for stereo speakers!
  2. Ok, right, so we are actually "playing" the effect in, like playing an instrument. Wondering if there would be a way to edit that after the take, or if you just have to keep trying it until its correct? Ari
  3. Hi Friends, I'm pondering some different ways to accomplish something, and wonder if Logic has onboard capabilities, or do I need some plug-in help. I think what I need is to automate EQ over time, along with reverb and volume, to create an effect. Imagine you heard a boom box playing music, 6 blocks away. It gradually comes closer until the boombox speaker is right in your face. My thought is to simulate that by starting with a narrow bandpass, echo/reverb on, and volume lowered. All three parameters gradually change until all are at the parameters of the finished mix. Maybe that's the totally wrong way to get that effect, but that's what comes to mind to try. Any ideas or advice appreciated. Ari
  4. Ok, yes that's it. I ran into a glitch where Logic was not letting me create any more tracks, though it was under the limit. So I created new tracks by duplicating existing tracks, and that duplicated the assignments also. That problem I solved by opening the project in another computer, creating some tracks, saving, and then going back to the first computer. After that it was creating new tracks properly. Thanks for the help.
  5. Hi Friends, Anyone know why would fader and pan control adjustments made on one track would be duplicated on another? I have several tracks that are doing this, as though they are grouped together, or shift selected together, but they are not. Fader up or down on one of these tracks produces the same motion on another, same with pan. Thanks, Ari
  6. I love it. Will try next time I have it open. Ari
  7. Hi all, Have had this random problem before, but not when I'm under the gun. Session coming up Monday to record a string trio. I opened my project just to make sure everything's ready to go, and logic is suddenly not creating takes with multiple audio passes. Instead it just replaces the previous take. The disclosure triangle that should show the take lanes is missing also. If I open another logic project with the same settings, the take lanes show, and it all works. I could create another project for this, but it sure would be nice to get this one working, since I've done quite a bit of pre-set up. To answer the obvious questions, no its not a midi track. Yes, recording preferences are set to "create take folder." Anything else I need to check? Screenshots attached. Any help appreciated. Ari
  8. Ahh, ok, envelope follower. I thought there might be some kind of plug-in to do that but had no idea what to call it. Will check that out.
  9. You're the best David. I don't think I've ever seen you stumped before. Maybe someone could come up with some clever workaround. Seems to always be a way if you think about it long enough.
  10. Right, ducker goes the opposite direction. I tried the logic stock expander. The one I have looks totally different than the one in the manual, and doesn't seem to have all the controls. But even with them, I don't see how I could get it to ride properly. It just expands over a threshold, like a compressor, to a predetermined ratio. I just want it to match the reference track, which is more detailed movement on the fly than just a ratio. I think what I'm looking for is some way to have logic analyze a track for volume increases and "create" an automation curve from it, that I could then copy to another track. Don't know any way to do that. I could make it up the automation curve manually, but since I have about 200 of these to make, that would kill me.
  11. Ok, not sure the best way to do this. I have two tracks and want the volume to rise and fall on one track, based on the volume increase/decrease of another. The first track is a finished music track, that has to remain unmodified in any way. The other track carries subliminal messaging that needs to be consistently lower in volume than the music track, but not much lower. The subliminal needs to react quickly to the rise and fall in volume of the music track to stay just beneath it, by a predetermined amount. Fiddled around with compression and gating by side chain, and that doesn't seem to quite do what I need. There's probably a simple answer, but I can't put my finger on it.
  12. Ok, that has worked for quite a while, but I have a stereo recording now where the quick swipe is not working on both tracks. Tracks are grouped, editing is checked in the group inspector. What else could it be?
  13. Hi friends, Never seen this before. I have one project in which the piano roll regions don't show up in the editor. New notes show as they are played in, but are blank when played back as if there is no region there. However, the sound plays. The notes can be viewed in the score editor, but nothing shows in the piano roll. Only one project where this started happening. If I open up a new project, it all works fine. Any ideas?
  14. Hi Friends, I'm sampling some of my commonly used guitar sounds for quicker access in Logic. Can anyone post a link to the most current EXS24 manual? Also, any useful tutorials that you know of? I'm getting the sounds in ok, but want to make some edits to them, and that requires a little more know how. Thank you, Ari
