  1. I would REALLY love to be able to do this: My sessions end up being huge, unwieldy, sprawling things with regions scattered throughout the arrange page. More often than not these are orchestral mockups which I'll then stem and demo before recording with an orchestra. I've been using LUNA a lot recently as a last port of call for these stems and I'm struck by how easy it is to export stems there. There are various ways to do this in Logic too but I do have a suggestion to make things quicker maybe? I colour all my stems in their groups together i.e. Strings, Brass, Woodwind etc etc, then I use 'select all same colour', solo lock and bounce and I get my stem. The advantage to this is that when I inevitably make changes later on, those regions stand out as different colours until I'm happy and I then I incorporate into the stem colour and then re-stem. It also means I don't necessarily have to organise everything together if it's better not to for other reasons - select all same colour is a brilliant key command. Could there be a function: Stem by region colour, or bounce by region colour or something. Spend the time logically colouring everything, set up a cycle and then just press one button... it would be a game-changer for me. Someone will tell me there's a better way to do this already so please let me know if so, this is just a way that would really suit my workflow. I know I can put things into folders and then bounce those tracks easily but I've never got on with doing that, involves too much work and there's never enough time. Apologies also if this has been suggested elsewhere Thanks Chris
  2. PS This also happens when joining two regions together whilst in solo lock. The newly formed (joined) region is dropped from solo lock even if both (pre-joined) regions had previously been solo locked - that can't be right! And again, this hasn't always been the case. Has this been logged somewhere already?
  3. Hi Flintholm Did you ever find a satisfactory solution to this? I have exactly the same problem and I've been scouring the internet for a solution for a while and only just come across this thread (I've not really known how to find the right words of description to Google!). This is a new feature/bug that crept in a while ago. Logic never used to do this so it was either introduced on purpose or by accident. I don't think the majority of people will work like this so it's very unlikely to be a problem that anyone other than us will have noticed! I've always worked in the same way to you. I orchestrate and compose for theatre/film and it suits me to play/improvise whilst relevant sequence regions are solo locked. I then capture the recording that I want but Logic does not include this new captured sequence in the solo lock/soloed regions. I've been working like this for years - like you I've been using Logic since its first inception and I never touch the record button. I think, like you, I work pretty fast and it's driving me nuts to find the freshly recorded sequence, highlight it then find the previously soloed sequence blocks and solo lock again - especially over a complex arrangement. I know there is a key command to select soloed regions but this seems so unnecessary and still trips up my workflow (i.e. capture record the region > press key command to select soloed regions > shift click newly captured region to include it > solo lock again. As I say, this is relatively *new* behaviour - this was not a problem before and Logic never used to work this way with capture record and solo but unfortunately I can't remember the version where it started. Is there a setting somewhere buried in the myriad menus that I've missed? Anyway, did you ever find a solution? 4. Just to say... Delighted that I've found the culprit. Roland Cloud Manager sitting quietly on my top right menu bar initiating this "lsof" process and bringing everything to a standstill. I found out by using the View> All processes, hierarchically option in Activity Monitor. Showed that the Roland app was responsible. Turned it off and the issue has totally disappeared. Thanks for the help though chaps, much appreciated. Chris
  5. And thanks Facej for the comprehensive answer, really helpful. Yes, all makes sense and feels like a good idea to get hold of a few SSDs exclusively for audio. I suppose the only thing that still confuses me slightly is that everything will happily run smoothly - no glitches, no slowing - until lsof starts despite the dinosaur drives. But maybe the sheer size and - as you say - spread of the files on the spinning disk are just exacerbating a normal system routine. Anyhow, thanks again for taking the time to help Cheers Chris
  6. OK Will do... thanks for taking the time, much appreciated.
  7. OK, sounds like a good excuse to get some heavyweight SSDs but what of the mysterious lsof? I get the impression it's a housekeeping process, indexing or something? Is it just something I'm noticing because of the size and number of files, and being amplified as a problem by using SATAs? Is lsof a system thing that happens all the time and I'm just noticing because of these circumstances or is it rogue? Like I say, there are long periods where all works smoothly and quickly and then grinds to a halt Thanks again for the help Chris
  8. That is a very good question... Just had a look: the audio threads (all 8 of them) are barely doing anything at all, either when the lsof process starts or when it stops, i.e. no noticeable difference. The I/O is peaking about 60% but averaging about 33% when lsof is not on. Again, can't see much difference when the lsof process happens. Maybe if I'm being really picky the I/O activity increases... but certainly not significantly. Thanks for the reply Chris
  9. Hi All I'm having a frustrating problem. Usually I work exclusively with software instruments where there are no issues, but every now and then I'll have fairly meaty audio projects. The audio files are usually pretty long - an hour plus live recordings - and can run to 40+ mono tracks. I put all audio on an external drive (either G-Drive or a Lacie) and everything will be running swiftly until the process (as noted in Activity Monitor) "lsof" starts. Things then start to crawl for about 20 seconds or so and then all is fine again. It is VERY frustrating! The process takes 98-99% processor resources and happens every 2 mins or so. I've googled for a solution obviously and there are other people with problems but nothing for Logic that I can find. The process appears to be initiated by Logic as it only appears in the Activity Monitor log when I'm working on it and not otherwise. I'm reluctant to mess with Terminal as some suggest. Maybe it's just a case of updating the OS (currently Sierra 10.12.6) but I'm reluctant to do that without a gap in work. To summarise: Problem only seems to present itself whilst using audio; the files themselves are pretty long - 450MB each with often over 40 of them. On my system "lsof" is activating whilst working with Logic. Files are on external TB2 drive, when I move to internal drive (hybrid drive) things improve a bit but only a bit; Slows to almost totally unresponsive. Feels like a fairly newish problem although I can't be sure when it started. 10. Hi I'm running into a very frustrating and curious problem. Playing certain (seems to be exclusively guitar) plugins - like ASM, ASP and Orange Tree Lap Steel guitar - seems to result in the random creation of MIDI take folders. I thought it was exclusively when I use controllers like mod, pitch bend or sustain but it seems to occur when playing just notes sometimes too. The takes within the folder are characterised by having the notes throughout the take and then having a sustained chord (like hung notes) for the rest of the take. It's on these random sustains that a new take is created. This is very hard to describe but generally the folder might have 8 or 9 takes each one ending with a sustained note or chord until the end of the sequence block. At first I thought this was a weird function with the plugins themselves (related to different strings on the guitar maybe) but I can't find a a setting to experiment with; then I thought it was maybe the master controller (Yamaha S90) which may indeed be the case; and now I'm checking here to see if anyone else has experienced this issue? It's very frustrating indeed as editing these take folders down is a royal pain in the backside. Anyone able to shed some light on this? 11. Hi Kai I had exactly the same concern but I've managed to make it work fine. I would suggest installing it to your macbook and then copying the relevant files over. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=97541 Follow this for the details. Good luck
  12. If it's of interest to anyone, it works! All content loaded, no issues so far, doesn't seem like anything's missing. So yeah, a success and a relief.
  13. OK, after a bit more research I've found someone trying something similar. I'm going to try this and will report back. I'm quite surprised there isn't more on this topic actually as there must be loads of people wanting to run LPX without a half-decent internet connection. Copying: /Applications/Logic Pro X.app /Library/Application Support/Logic /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library /Library/Audio/Apple Loops /Library/Audio/Impulse Responses to external disk and will see if it all works at the other end!
  14. Hi I have a studio in the countryside which has a very poor internet connection - equivalent to a dialup - and I want to know how to install LPX to that machine, a full download is not realistic. I've downloaded and installed the whole shebang to my London machine. Is there a way of copying relevant content and programs to an external disk and then reinstalling. If so, anyone know how to do this? I've been following this link: /viewtopic.php?f=1&t=97065 and I don't believe there's a licensing issue (I would actually happily buy it again but this doesn't seem necessary). This must be a common problem surely? Not everyone has a super-duper fibre optic connection. I do have a slightly creaky macbook pro too and am contemplating installing Logic x to this and then migrating it over to this country computer. Does anyone know if this would work or the specifics of doing it? Any help would be very gratefully received Chris
