  1. Many thanks - I have downloaded it and will study memory issues Thanks Ian
  2. Here is a screen shot of the Kontakt Memory Pref Pane Set as this is in the screen shot - every Sample Library used on all active channels in Logic Pro X will be loaded and help in RAM On a large project this could become quite a large package as you can imagine. I wonder how this would effect processing and Latency Ian Kontakt Memory Pref Pane
  3. Thanks to you both, Samueloscar and mysticfm I did have a play around with a friends version and loaded up various libraries. He simply didn't know the answers to how it functioned but he seems to have quite an array of libraries. I loaded up and tested: Spitfire - Albion I ProjectSam - Orchestral Essentials Cinesamples - Horns and a bunch of other NI made libraries The heaviest one to load was Albion / Full Orchestra / All articulations at around 750 MB for the full set held in RAM - but it does give you the choose of which sample sets to load/turn off/on etc. Kontakt certainly appears to load selected sets directly up into the RAM for the duration of their being used even before you play any notes. It seems to hold the entire selected set in RAM making it available before you need it - at least thats how it seems to work. My own computer has around 12 GB RAM - imac 2011 2.5 GHz Intel Quad Core i5 I am going to get an external Thunderbolt 1TB drive to store all the samples on as I hear that this makes it much faster to access during usage. I will certainly invest in Kontakt 5 and start acquiring sample Libraries - it looks like great stuff! I may get back to you with further questions if thats alright - Im a bit new to this concept. Cheers Ian
  4. Hello all, I am thinking of installing and using Native Instruments Kontakt 5 with Logic Pro X and have a couple of questions for anybody out there who might know. When Kontakt loads up a sample library, placed in a channel of Logic - does it place all the samples of the selected set into RAM where they are held the whole time? If I have a layered orchestral piece with say . . . 12 channels - each one containing a Kontakt Library which has been loaded up - Is the entire sum of all loaded sample libraries held in RAM? OR - does the whole matter rest upon streaming the samples from their resting place as required in realtime? This would really help me to understand that hardware and software requirements to make this work smoothly with large orchestral arrangements. Looking forward to your feedback Many thanks Ian
  5. Perhaps somebody could do a test - selecting one of the Orchestral String instruments that include articulation controls (legato, staccato, pizzicato, tremolo) in their Smart Controls and see if they can effect the change. In theory this smart control functionality should be audible using either a midi controller or by using Musical Typing or the Piano Scroll - I have no luck with either. Thanks
  6. Yes indeed - even after recording into the track with staccato enabled still no change - no matter which style I choose still nothing - I also notice that other people in other forums including Apple have found the same problem. I was wondering if something has to be activated to get this function to work. You will remember that in LP9 there were actually separate violin and string voices for each of the different playing styles - now with the new smart control this is reduced. Not quite sure what to do. Thanks
  7. Dear Eric - If I'm playing around seeing how things sound using my MIDI control device to a selected Violin in the channel and I select the control button that makes the violin instrument be played Staccato - I hear nothing in the audible playback - is this normal?
  8. I've downloaded and installed the optional Orchestral > Strings software instrument patches in Logic X. Many (but not all) of these patches include articulation controls (legato, staccato, pizzicato, tremolo) in their Smart Controls. However, changing the articulation settings in the Smart Controls window seems to have no apparent effect. Any patch I choose continues to play as if legato is selected no matter what articulation setting I've chosen. What am I missing? Thanks, Ian
  9. Hello Triplets, your questions is interesting, perhaps you can tell my why this might cause anomalies. I normally start each project with a fresh clean page, setting up my basic perimeters from scratch. Some might see this as unnecessary but I like a fresh approach and leaving behind my mistakes. Look forward to your views on your question, always keen to learn. Thanks Ian
  10. Gentlemen, Today I booted up my machine - went through an assortment of projects - carefully monitoring my Quad Core Processor - still using 64 I/O buffer size - for some reason each piece plays perfectly - processing is more or less equally distributed over the 4 Cores and there is NO CPU overrun at all!? Its either miraculous or there is something very uncontrollable about the whole matter. I have read through the various other articles on the matter and can see that I have already been exercising most of the tips and tricks, from selecting an empty audio track during playback to routing effects etc over auxiliary channels to help distribution. Perhaps the weather has something to do with this sporadic behaviour (but I think not). I like to take a carefull, step-by-step scientific approach to solving problems but this issue is obviously controlled by some parallell universe. If the issue repeats itself I shall let you know. Many thanks to all of you who read my plea and assisted. All the best! Ian Cattanach
  11. Dear Eric, I have an issue also with CPU overloads continuously. imac 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 12 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 Ram System version 10.8.4 Focusrite Scarlette 2i2 Logic Pro 9.1.8 - running in 64 bit mode and attached is a screen shot of the preferences I have set for Core Audio. I always run Logic alone - all other apps off - internet disconnected. A simple 5 track project - made up of 3 midi and 2 audio regions brought straight in from the logic library - each with compression and EQ - a limiter placed on the Stereo OUT In other words a SIMPLE PROJECT I get sporadic CPU overload peaking in the red and producing crack and thump sounds. Given the simplicity of the project, the lack of filters and plugins, the capacity and RAM of the hardware . . . should I be getting such issues with the CPU? Perhaps I am doing something very stupid here but I can't seem to stop the CPU monitor from hitting red whenever it feels like it. I had the machine checked (its pretty new) and it has a clean bill of health. Any ideas? Thanks Ian Cattanach
