  1. Hi All, (triplets are you out there what do you think?) What's the max amount of RAM you can put in an iMac 27-inch i7. On the Apple site it looks like 16gb but OWC is selling a 32gb kit. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/1333DDR3S32S/ Also would you guys recommend buying OWC and installing myself or just having Apple put the RAM in when I pick up my new iMac (hopefully next weekend). Thanks!
  2. Thanks triplets! I didn't even think about daisy-chaining. Does it make a difference which one is first in the chain? - Normally slowest one would be the last but if both are exactly the same which should be last samples or project file drive?)
  3. Hi Guys, I haven't been on here in quite some time. I've been working like mad at my day job (watchmaker) and things are settling down a bit so I need to get back to my music. Believe it or not I have been using a G5 (PowerPC) for the past 7-8 years and forced myself to use only a very small selection of plugins and instruments with Logic Pro 8. The great thing is that I forced myself to really get to know them in and out and it's helped me to learn more technique and tricks. So I am ready for a much needed upgrade to any Mac with an Intel processor. I don't want to go the whole Mac pro route and don't really need portability of a MacBook and so I decided to go with: iMac 27" - 3.4Ghz Quad-core Intel i7 - 8GB RAM (I already have a Mackie Onyx Black USB Audio Interface and a Korg MicroKontrol midi controller also USB) i think for my apps and operating system the 1TB Drive is fine but since I will need a second drive for my huge sample library I've built up over the years (mostly drums and found sounds) as well as my EXS sample library I went out and picked up a Glyph GPT50 2TB 7200RPM external drive. The drive will be hooked up to the one Firewire 800 port that the iMac comes with. (I also have 2 older 500GB 7200 RPM USB external drives) I guess my question is how should I set up my project files. My sample library will be on the Glyph so is it ok to put my project files on the Glyph as well? If I do should it just be a folder or should I partition the drive to keep the samples sort of neatly separated from the project files. Or would you use one of the older 500GB USB drives strictly for project files? I look forward to any thoughts or advise you can send my way. Thanks in advance and my apologies the long email. All good things,
  4. Thanks Red Robin and onewave, I decided to go with the Mackie. I couldn't resist after seeing the pic Red Robin posted. It should arrive in a few days, I'll report back as soon as it does and I give it a go.
  5. Thanks Red Robin. My original choice was the Mackie when I happen to come across the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. They both have good solid reviews and look like they can do the job. From what I've read the Preamps seem to be pretty even but I don't do too much recording and if I did I would do it on my G5 with the MOTU 24io. For me the converters will be more important since I'll need them to do semi decent mix downs while on the road. From what I've read they both have pretty good AD/DA for their price point so it's tough to choose based on that research so far (without actually hearing them both). They have a lot of the similar if not exact the same features so the main difference I see are: * The Mackie is at a nice ergonomic angle but the Scarlett has a nice big volume knob. My current rig is hooked up to a Mackie 1642-VLZ Pro mixer and I never liked the monitor knob. It seemed to go from no sound to a bit too loud as soon as I touched it (if that makes any sense). * They both have dedicated 0 latency direct monitoring but from reading the user manuals only the Mackie has a dedicated volume knob for the input monitoring and the ability to monitor in mono or stereo. The Scarlett only has the the switch to turn direct monitoring on. * Mackie is USB 1.1 but does not need a driver to work on a mac. The Scarlett is USB 2.0 but you need to install a driver for it to work. I'm thinking for the quick audio and a few VSTi's dance/club type stuff that I'm doing I wouldn't notice a difference in the USB speed so I'm not sure if this even matters. Unless the USB 2.0 contributes that much more stability to make me go for the Scarlett, I think I will go for the Mackie for the ergonomic angle and the direct monitoring input volume control. I know I'm being way to picky for such a lower cost interface but I'm geeky that way. Thanks again for the feedback guys, much appreciated.
  6. Thanks for the feedback triplets (M-Audio is off the list as I've heard negative reviews on them)! The Scarlett 2i2 is looking pretty good to me too. I have a Glyph 500GB 7200 RPM external (with Firewire and USB) to run my audio samples from as well as save my projects too. I also upgraded the Mac Book's internal drive to a 7200rpm. I'm going with the 17inch Mac Book Pro as it has 3 USB ports as oposse to the 15 inch which only has 2 (1 for my Controller, 2nd for the audio interface and 3rd for a mouse) Why would you go with the Scarlett over the Blackjack?
  7. Hi Guys, My normal set up is a G5 (PowerPC) with a MOTU 24io but I'm getting a Mac Book Pro (with Intel finally) and I'm researching my options for a USB Audio Interface under about $200 or so. My first choice would have been an Apogee Duet 2 (great sound quality) but they are a bit pricey for my budget and I'm not crazy about their breakout cable setup. I don't do much recording (the occasional vocal hook once in a blue) and so would need it for mostly monitoring on my headphones or Mackie HR824 monitors. I also want something that has a quick and easy volume control. So I was considering: 1) Mackie Onyx Blackjack (I'm leaning toward this one) 2) Focusrite Saffire 6 or Scarlett 2i2 3) M-Audio Fast Track Any feedback, opinions or suggestions would be appreciated. Since I'm leaning toward the Mackie and the Saffire is the obvious competitor...I guess I'm looking for any possible reason to go with the Saffire instead (does it sound better or more transparent than the Mackie). The other thing I was wondering was that almost all of these are USB 1.1 (except the Scarlett which is USB2.0) should I be worried about using 1.1 and go for USB 2.0 instead? Thanks in advance for any help.
  8. Hi Guys, I've been away for a while but now I'm back. It's amazing that these presets are still useful for so many of you after all these years. I'll be uploading some new ones very soon.
  9. for a specific size region highlight the area with the looping function, solo the track and bounce. Make sure add to audio window is selected when bouncing and add it to the sequence from you audio bin.
  10. Dude, You should read the manual. First off you are trying to open up instruments through your FX inserts. This will only show instruments which have their own FX sections which you can use as in insert FX. To open and instrument like Battery or Kontakt you need to open it up from the I/O section. Click open the menu right above your output (which by your screenshot is OUT 1-2). You are basically telling Logic that your sound source or input is from an instrument. In regards to the ticks the ones on the first column titled Logic shows your active plugins in Logic. The second column shows what plugins are active or can be used on or from nodes. Read the manual about nodes if you need more info but it basically allows you to distribute the processing over multiple machines.
  11. I find this interesting since I'm just getting into groove quantizing now with some swing. I wasn't aware I can quantize chopped up audio in the event list. I tried to use a 16d swing quantize on some basic open hi hats (it's a minimal house project). I thought it would nudge it over slightly but nothing happened. My project contains chopped up audio hits (not entire loops) and midi programming. My midi is quantized with a 16D setting to give it some swing and I would like to give the same swing feel to my audio hits. What I was doing as a work around was using the delay setting in the region parameter box for the audio but I can't figure out how much delay is equivalent to the various quantize settings (specifically 16a, 16b, 16c & 16d) What am I doing wrong? When you do quantize chopped audio in the event list - does it quantize based on the anchor point or start of region? Most likely the anchor but I'm just checking. Hope this makes sense. Any info on this would be much appreciated.

  13. The book is scheduled to release on October 31st. You will find it at all the major online and brick and mortar outlets, or you can order it directly from the publisher at http://www.peachpit.com/store/product.aspx?isbn=0321502922 Hi David - Not sure if this is possible or not but can you post a kind of table of contents of what's in your book? Sounds interesting and together with the DVD well that's just great. I do less live stuff and a lot less recording (except for the occasional vocal or audio from my hardware synth) and more electronic / sample based music production (mostly house and electro). Would you still recommend the content of your book to me? **sorry for the post jacking.
