  1. Do the drives transfer speeds matter that much for recording and does Bus powered over external powered have any kind of drastic effect ?
  2. Hey guys, recently I tried recording 32 tracks of live audio simultaneously into my Mac mini (specs listed below) and was unable to capture more than 17 before Logic X told me my disk was too slow. Now, I've done the research and I've ordered an external hard drive that spins at 7200rpm and is powered by USB 3.0 and/or Thunderbolt, as this was what has been recommended to me. I was just wondering, would Bus powered drives have a harder time than a drive with its own dedicated power supply? Also, do transfer rates have any huge effect on the multitracking process? The drive I ordered says it gets about 130mbps but I wasn't sure if that will effect my recording performance much or not, if so I'd like to find another drive. Any and all responses would be greatly appreciated as I do not want to waste time or money on a device that isn't going to help me accomplish my goal. Thanks so much!

  4. I've ordered a USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt external drive that spins at 7200rpm but I was just curious, do transfer rates matter in this? It says it gets about 130mbps, a little more than that actually just can't remember the exact number. Would this be preferred or at least up to spec enough to handle what I'm trying to do?? Any response would be greatly appreciated as I do not want to waste time and money on a device if it isn't going to do the job for me. Thank you so much!
  5. Okay so, I'm in the process of getting a new external hard drive this week and was wondering would it be better to go with USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt? I can do 32 tracks via 1 FireWire cable from our foh console easy but my current hard drive isn't fast enough to do all 32 tracks at once but here's the kicker, we have 48 channels max that are available at all times for the shows we put on, so I'm wondering would the external drives you guys are recommending be able to handle 48 tracks all at once as easily as the 32 we already have via FireWire? Because if so I'm gonna buy a couple more 8 channel rack interfaces and that'll give me 48 channels in via FireWire from my interfaces but I need to know what kind of external drive would be able to handle that much. Any help is still very much appreciated and I also just want to say thank you for all the help so far and all the insight into this, seriously thanks a lot you guys.
  6. Hi, sorry I'm not sure what light pipe is, I've tried looking into it but never made it very far. Can I ask how you got 32 channels with just the two Motu 8's? Or were you saying you also used 2 Presonus interfaces as well?
  7. Hey guys thanks for all the replies, you're all amazing people. First, I did record directly to my internal drive which had 940GB of free space and I realize now that even though it had plenty of space it was prob still a big mistake. Today I did some test runs during soundcheck and recorded into my internal again and after about 6 minutes I got an error saying my disk is too slow. I'm now recording to my external drive tonight and it's only 18 channels but I'm not sure the RPM and I believe it's USB 2.0. I bought it about 3 years ago and I'm not sure where to look to find the specs on it anymore. It's a Western Digital External 1TB Drive, I'm recording directly from an AVID SC48 console via FireWire 32 channels coming in. I get signal and can record easily and connection and compatibility is fast and easy but I notice the HD meter in Logic X spiking to the top every now and then, which scares me. However right now I've been recording 18 channels for the last 40 mins straight with no issue and the HD meter only spiked a few times. Right now it's steady and small and seems to be okay. Anyone know how I can check the specs of my external drive and maybe I can find out what the speed is in order to see if I should get a newer and faster one? Just not really sure why I never have any of these problems at home, I use Presonus Firestudio Project interfaces and record at least 11 channels any time I do a drum kit and I can go al day recording drums and not ever encounter a Hard Drive issue. Any help is very much appreciated guys, thanks again!
  8. Okay so, I'm on a 2012 Mac mini with 16GB of RAM, 1TB HD, i7 and using Logic Pro X. I've been trying to do live multitracking from my venues SC48 AVID console at front of house and yesterday was my first tracking ever. I got everything working, signal flow and levels looked great, got through soundcheck and hit record. It recorded all of the first band and then I opened a second project for the next band that I already had saved and ready to go. However, Logic suddenly stopped itself right before the end of their last song and it was only a 35 min recording. Suddenly it just stopped and the audio regions ended there at the stopping point and I still cannot figure out why it just stopped itself. I saw no error or pop up windows or anything. This is something I am trying to offer more of at my venue for paying bands and could really use some help figuring out how to hit record and walk away without worry that this is going to happen..... I recorded at 41k sample rate while the SC48 console is 48k and thought maybe that was a reason, I had no other programs open, I did have wifi connected but never usually have a problem with that affecting Logic, my recording file type was AIFF and I thought for a second that maybe the file size of the regions got too big to handle but when I looked at them in the audio bin they were no bigger than 245MB. I read that recording silence is the same as recording audio in regards to a regions file size so I am going to setup my Mac to record the same amount of tracks (17) while I'm at school today and see how long it goes before stopping itself. I also heard that CAF files have no file size limitations in theory and was wondering if I should do that next time instead but as I said before, none of the AIFF regions in my last nights recording ever got above 245MB. I'm very confused. Can anyone help me understand why Logic just suddenly stopped my recording and help me figure out how to prevent this from happening in the future please! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
  9. This is actually the first LIVE drummer I have ever recorded with intent to mix and master and release. So far the mix is great and all other hits are solid, I have also heard of replacing the kicks with other hits in the song and I got to be honest, I have no clue how to go about doing so hehe If there's any advise or instructions you could give to help I would greatly appreciate it!
  10. So I am currently tracking a paying metal band in my studio, started with the drummer of course, and I tracked him on their first song all the way through. His performance was not very solid, needless to say I had to Quantize the entire take (of course) but then had to do a BUTT LOAD of Flex editing to make his performance as tight as it should be. I have a really SOLID mix on the whole drum kit itself and the tones and mix both sound amazing, even the band agrees. So... My main question here is - After doing HOURS of editing, I got the drums and the overall performance to sound pretty freaking solid. Each hit and cymbal sounds pretty consistent and he's right on with the click (thanks to flex). However, theres one and literally just ONE kick hit towards the end of the song that has a terrible sounding pop to it. I can't seem to get rid of it and have been trying all morning. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have bypassed all plugins on the kick channel to search for what may be causing that to happen. No luck. It sounds like a pop in the speakers almost but it happens every time, right on that kick, and only that kick. Anyways, I can shed more light on the details if anyone is willing to help me try and tackle this! Thanks!
  11. hey thanks for the help guys! Still trying to look for more freeware plugins such as reverbs and delays, I have used up as much as I can in Logics stock plugins lol! Hoping more users will post in this thread and share the wealth! Thanks again!
  12. Hi, I am running Logic Pro 9 on a Mac Mini (late 2012) with 2.3GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, 1TB HD, OS X Yosemite, with 4 Presonus Firestudio Project interfaces, giving me 32 mic pres directly into Logic, I run guitars through my Axe-FX via USB straight into Logic, and I am just starting to get into the whole mixing aspect of everything. Just now learning about compressors and limiters and such. I was hoping some of you lovely fellow Logic users could shed some light on what some of the best Reverb and Delay plugins there are out there. What are some of the top best MUST HAVE Reverb and Delay plugins that I should add to my collection in Logic!?!? ANY and ALL help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!
  13. Was this ever answered ??? Cause I am having the same issue!
  14. I am currently running Logic Pro 9 on a Mac Mini (late 2012), 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB !^)) MHz DDR3, 1TB HD, OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 I have 4 Presonus Firestudio Projects allowing me 32 channels in, with a Fractal Audio Axe-FX II XL and we run live drums on my drummers kit, as well as live guitars when someone wants them over the Axe FX. We use Shure mics for the drums in an Auralex coated room with carpet and a room mic setup in the bathroom attached. Now that my entire setup is pretty much listed (as much as needed for the sake of this post), I was hoping someone could shed some info on how to get more plugins or virtual instruments inside of Logic 9. I have the stock installation and was hoping to expand my options on plugins. I basically want more things such as Reverbs, Delays, Compressors, EQ's, etc. Also more virtual instruments or sound libraries in a sense. I am still pretty new to the whole recording scenario and just trying to expand my knowledge... A lot hehe Are there any websites or does Apple offer any add ons or plugin packs? Can I run VST files or do they HAVE TO be AU files? If so, is there a way to convert files and open VST plugins inside of Logic? Sorry for so many questions, just really want to level up my plugin status! ANY and ALL help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
