  1. I Just did my own comparison of Logic's Vintage VCA versus the Softube VCA compressor and found it easier to use the Softube's VCA. As some reviewers had suggested, the presets are more subtle and it just sounds better to me. You can probably get the same results with Logic's Vintage VCA by tweaking - but I didn't find the Logic presets useful. I worked with a basic kick and snare beat to start. I'll try it on bass and some other instruments later - although like many of us, I have custom Logic compressor settings I've grown used to for most instruments. I have a slew of UAD plugins and use classic 1176 and LA2A style compressors for vocals, acoustic guitar and typical acoustic sources. Adopting task specific compressors like the Softube VCA, say for drums, is a new strategy. Not sure using 4 or 5 different compressors is a road I want to travel.
  2. Softube offers their VCA Compressor free during March, but I’m wondering if it does anything more than the standard Logic compressor? Reviews suggest the presets from Softube are great and subtle on drums and typical instruments using compression.
  3. So, the daisy chain idea is not the limitation, it’s the Apollo x4! Gotcha! There are 16 channel pre-amp audio interfaces with ADAT, but connected to the x4, I suppose it would only recognize the first 8…. oh, well.
  4. I have an Apollo x4 Thunderbolt and an old MOTU 8 pre [firewire] connected via ADAT for a total of 12 inputs. In this way the firewire doesn’t matter, I’m just using the MOTU pre-amps via ADAT. Can I daisy chain another MOTU 8 pre for 20 inputs in total? What would the cabling look like? Can I avoid creating an Aggregate Device for the Apollo x4 to recognize all 16 ADAT inputs from 2 devices?
  5. Kind of... I did find a website with Logic Chord Trigger presets for a few dozen popular songs. I'm sure this guy just played the chords on his midi controller, or used a mouse to pick out the notes within Chord Trigger itself. What I was looking for - just out of interest - is a more direct way to create the chord trigger definitions from midi. I haven't found anything yet. I did find a program/utility that converts midi to a Scaler 2 chord set. https://github.com/joanroig/midi-to-scaler-chord-sets Like you said, typical Logic users have a music background and at least some music theory. I try not to be critical, but there's a lot of non-musicians using FL Studio, where this notion of creating songs with no knowledge of how to play an instrument is necessary. It seems crazy to me, but a lot of the marketing of FL Studio, and devices like the MPC line, promote the "you don't need to know anything about music" to write and record hit songs.
  6. Just catching up on this topic. I recently upgraded the UA software to V11 to get the latest Hemisphere plugin that works with Apollo Hardware. It was released Nov 7, 2023. Like usual, it automatically installed all 100+ UA plugins, even the ones unauthorized. Then - yet again - I had to open Logic Plugin Manager and manually de-select all the plugins I don't own. How frustrating! Is there any better method?
  7. I'm blown away by the breadth and enthusiasm of the Ripchord community, offering free chord sets so non-musicians can play popular chord progressions with 1 finger! Or, load extensive chord progressions into an MPC or Maschine pad device. It makes total sense for producers that don't know how to play an instrument. It's a real contrast and eye-opener for somebody with formal training on piano and music theory. It's all relatively new to me, but that community has been growing for a couple years. Of course it's popular.... it's easy and free https://trackbout.com/ripchord Hey, doesn't Ripchord look familiar? Similarly, you can find free or for sale chord sets to import into Scaler 2. So... I'm thinking... Logic Chord Trigger is kind of the same thing. Why are there such a limited selection of chord sets? Why hasn't this taken off like Ripchord or Scaler 2? Curious if anybody has hear of, or found a utility that creates Logic chord sets for Chord Trigger?
  8. Ok - I'm having a similar problem, and it's not related to the pitch wheel. At first I thought my Kontrol M32 pitch wheel WAS the problem, but when I shut down, unplugged and replugged the M32 usb, the problem was gone. But today I had the same out-of-tune problem with my Launchkey 61 MK3. My issue might be related to Ripchord chord generator. Ripchord plays chords assigned to key switches. The key switches used have nothing to do with the chords. Ex. I'm playing a C, but hearing an F#-. But, in this case, I played an accompanying piano lead on a separate track and the midi was in F-. So, the Ripchord generator must have played the chord progression in F- yesterday. Why else would I have recorded the lead in F-? Right? Today, I open the same project in Logic and the track with the Ripchord chords are in F#-, but my lead on the second track is in F- (just like yesterday). When I check the chords in Ripchord, they are shown to be in F#- (and they probably always were). Now, keep in mind, the midi shown on the Ripchord track are just the keyswitches.... C, D, F, etc. Am I going crazy? I tried to recreate the problem today. New project, same VSTs, same Ripchord preset, same key... all is fine..... until tomorrow.
  9. A complete database of all free plugins would be challenging to maintain, I think. Seems there are new plugins every day and older plugins are acquired or disappear almost as quickly.
  10. The Apple Logic website says 70 FX. I've been interested in comparing the Logic list to the Melda [bundle] and Kilohearts [bundle]. So, as a starting point, I looked in Plugin Manager for 10.8 and found some new things. First, there are 111 effects - not 70. Here's my list.... 1 Adaptive Limiter 2 Amp Designer 3 Auto Sampler 4 AutoFunk 5 AutoFilter 6 Bass Amp Desinger 7 Beat Breaker 8 Binaural Processing 9 Bit Crusher 10 Blue Echo 11 BPM Counter 12 Candy Fuzz 13 Channel EQ 14 Chorus 15 ChromaVerb 16 Classic Wah 17 Clip Distortion 18 Compressor 19 Correlation Meter 20 DeEsser 2 21 Delay Designer 22 Direction Mixer 23 Distortion 24 Distortion II 25 Dolby Atmos 26 Double Dragon 27 Down Mixer 28 Dr. Octave 29 Echo 30 Ensemble 31 Enveloper 32 EnVerb 33 EVOC 20 Filterbank 34 EVOC 20 TrackOscillator 35 Exciter 36 Expander 37 Flange Factory 38 Flanger 39 Fuzz Machine 40 Fuzz Wah 41 Gain 42 Graghic EQ 43 Grinder 44 Grit 45 Happy Face Fuzz 46 Heavenly Chorus 47 Hi-Drive 48 I/O 49 Level Meter 50 Limiter 51 Linear Phase EQ 52 Loudness Meter 53 Mastering Assistant 54 Match EQ 55 Microphaser 56 Modern Wah 57 Modulation Delay 58 Monster Fuzz 59 Miltchannel Gain 60 Multipresser 61 Noise Gate 62 OctaFuzz 63 OverDrive 64 Pedalboard 65 Phase Distortion 66 Phase Tripper 67 Phaser 68 Phat FX 69 Phaze 2 70 Pitch Correction 71 Pitch Shifter 72 Rawk! Inspired, I'm going to invest a bit of time investigating some of the FXs from Logic that I've over-looked in the past!
  11. Thanks. I rely on UA Console and virtual channels for routing mics as well as DAW output and system audio. Hopefully this mic mode 'feature' doesn't interfere. More testing.... Also just found out Apple dropped display scaling HDR for ext 4k monitors in Sonoma 14.1 That's annoying. Hopefully a fix is forthcoming.
  12. Logic 10.8 on Sonoma 14.1. What's this new icon for Logic Mic Mode in the system tray?
  13. Great new features - it's like Christmas! - but I was happy and stable on Monterey 12.4. Not sure I'm ready to jump into an OS update.... I'm excited to try the mastering plugin, although I'd just gained some experience with Ozone 11 and it took some time to develop faith in Izotope. Sample Alchemy and Beat Breaker are nifty. I tried them on Logic for iPad but avoided using them because I couldn't migrate my work to Logic MacOS. With 10.8 I'm looking forward to using them more. Slip & Rotate edit tools are nice, but I was achieving similar results with the basic editing. Frankly, I need to take my editing techniques up a notch, and these new tools will help. The Drummer Region enhancements will please a lot of creators, but I only use Drummer for quick & dirty drum accompaniment when I writing a new song. I'm usually picky about drum patterns and drum sounds and quickly migrate to DMD and my preferred kits and samples. Lastly - would I use 32 bit float resolution? Hard to say.
  14. Some good presets - suddenly remembered! Preston Organ Living Room Organ 60's Blues Funk Organ - almost full stops! Wheel-Wah Clean Soul Organ 1 J.Smith 3 Until I played with some of these presets, I had forgotten just how diverse the Vintage B3 can sound - these preset names came back to me. What else is cool, is that many presets are named after famous organist, and some have "ToP" for Tower of Power and Chester Thompson! Seems crazy Apple would drop these presets.
