  1. I use a 4k 43-inch LG monitor about 80 cm from my eyes. Works great. Laptop screens are a stopgap for working on the road.
  2. The lights blink on my Emagic MT-4 when I enable MIDI clock in MIdi Sync Project settings. They turn off when I disable. I guess this means it works? If I send clock to my Wavestate(hardware), the tempo of the sequenced sounds follows. So it works for me.
  3. I have been doing tests/work with atmos and derivatives. For post-production, with a proper 7.1.4 setup, it is great for sfx, atmos etc. But my tests with binaural on headphones are much less convincing. All the elaborate panning sounds like LR shifts. I have no sense of up/down, and front/back is also vague. This is not a Logic problem, binaural in general does not work very well for me. Is there anyone who has experience with a properly implemented head/ear transfer function? That should make it much more real. I don't see mainstream acceptance of this format, unless binaural is spectacular(maybe with Apple earbuds?), which it isn't. Also, I have a hard time seeing any advantages for pop music. Or most classical or jazz, for that matter. Podcasts, audiobooks, videos, art installations can benefit from immersive audio, but music... I don't know.
  4. Ugh! Sorry to hear. I had a similar issue with my UAD extension being quarantined after upgrade to Catalina. I could not get the "Allow" option to show up for the life of me. Apple's insanely strict security has made life harder in some cases. I will email you what worked for me. It's a bit involved but worked to force the extension to be uninstalled and reinstalled. Had this too when I upgraded from Mojave to Big Sur the other day. Disable SIP/install/Test/Re-enable SIP. UAD tech supt wasn't of much help. I complained to another hardware vendor, he says the Apple notarisation stuff is buggy. And now we move on with yet another upgrade of the OS...With even more social media possibilties. Just the thing I need on a workstation.
  5. Been working in Logic Pro 10.5.1 quite a bit, as my fellow musicians all use GB or LP, and I pick up their demo projects for adding stuff/rerecording/mixing etc. In general, this works well. Today I launched a project that I had been working on till late yesterday with 0 problems, LP crashed with this error in the logs: /Library/Frameworks/UAD-2 GUI Support.framework/Versions/A/UAD-2 GUI Support MALondonIV | 55c921e417d7ea46dd67c836dd0d3ea5353ba77f7e81b63db63248334585cbae | 45b84f1d96484be8b35b202bcd817966285356bf | 2020-06-09_13:15:32 Tried several times, rebooted computer, no go. UAD stuff is up to date. Then I tried the following trick that will often work in Cubase too: Launch another project first. Leave it open. Then open the offending project. Loads fine. Now close the first project. Continue working. Stuff(third party plug-ins?) gets loaded differently, and all is well again. Both in Cubase and Logic, this will only happen with a good load of third party plug-ins. There's no real culprit as far as I can tell, it's the combination of stuff that crosses some critical value and then your project will not load properly on next launch. Remarkable, as both programs use very different code and VST and AU plug-ins aren't the same either. Really annoying and a waste of time. I have this less/not at all with Bitwig, but maybe that's because my BW projects are smaller.
  6. Using an SSD for just projects will give the least amount of speed improvement. What will really speed up everything: your OS + programs on SSD. NVME is best. Then, SSD/NVME for (sample) libraries. I can load a big sampled instrument in more or less the same time as it takes to insert a VI synth. I don't miss the times I had to wait for minutes to load a sampled piano, only to decide an organ might fit the track better. Last, ssd for projects/data. I only use noisy/hot/vulnerable HD's for backups. Switch them on, do the backup, switch them off. Ah. Silence. Every once in a while I check the HD clone of my boot NVME by booting from it. HD's are really really slow for nowadays standards.... Like 10 times as slow for OS use. I normally boot in 10 seconds or so, but with an HD it will take 2 minutes... A musician friend of mine still has an iMac(5-6 years old) with a 5400rpm HD drive. It's so slow that is seems broken. But it is not. Remarkably, he still manages to write and record songs at breakneck speed using Logic...
  7. I really like my upgraded 15 years old Roland TD-20 and Toontrack SD3 with the Decades or Hansa kits. Really low latency is mandatory to make the drummer comfortable. I never use the builtin Roland sounds, it's MIDI into Logic or Cubase. Quick, silent, convenient. I will record a bunch of tracks/comp/correct/copy, add fills from my library, switch sounds and never fail to be amazed by the results. Recording just a verse or a chorus in cycle mode, terrific. Just quantize the introfill to 16 Swing C and leave the rest alone, amazing. Try out different ideas that you can undo in literally no time. Stunning. For pop, there's plenty of nuance with edrums. In fact, 90% of the time there's still too much that has to be corrected. I also like and use drummachines/sequenced rhythms all the time. And cut-up loops. Loops are great as a metronome replacement. But if you do acoustic jazz and have a first class drummer, then yes. Get a real, great sounding drumkit. Tune for days. Hire a great sounding studio with terrific mikes. Get an engineer who is a master in recording acoustic jazz. In fact, mic up the whole band for that in the pocket feel. Deal with crosstalk. Make sure the vibes are right, but watch out with the liquor and drugs. Often, there's still convoluted editing to be done. That's really expensive big studio stuff. Not many big studio's around anymore... And the ones that are still there don't use Logic but Pro Tools...
  8. I mentioned the Master Fader, which is different from the Stereo Out. It's the devil's work and here's why: MF affects all outputs, and invisibly, so if MF is set to -3, your drummer's headphones will be 3dB quieter, despite that output's fader looking untouched. Add to this that the conveniently placed, easy to reach, *unnamed*, horizontal fader top right in the Main window is controlling that very MF and you're set up for some frustrating troubleshooting. There are countless posts on this and other forums which go "My Bounce levels are different! Logic sux!". And as a substitute for the IT-Guys' proverbial "Is it plugged in ? Have you tried turning it off and on again?" the proper reply is "Disable Normalize. Set the Master Fader back to unity." and lo and behold, everything is fine again. MF does not affect Bounce quality, it changes its level, and there is no known use case where you actually want that to happen invisibly. Yes, I regularly fall into this trap, MF not at 0. I never use/touch this fader myself, but people who send me projects do...
  9. Looks fine to me. 48 VI's is quite a lot. Turbo is extra CPU speed, this means a more less exponential increase in power consumption. Power consumption means heat.. So switching this off will mean lower wattage = less heat, but at the cost of a general CPU increase. Laptops don't have space for elaborate cooling of their internals. This means fans will make noise, the whole thing gets really hot, or stuff will get throttled. Using a special low-noise fan cooled pad to put your MBP on will sometimes help a bit. Using a pillow as a stand is a bad idea, as is working in direct sunlight. The new M1 laptops should be better in this regard, as they use less power for the same amount of DAW work.

    Big Sur update

Metric Halo ULN-8/Metric Halo ULN-2/Color Munki Smile screen calibration tool. In my experience as a tech support person for pro audio, I can tell you that the amount of MacOS support calls sharply declines after .4 becomes available. For about 2 months everybody is happy, then the next MacOS version is introduced. People will naively install this, buy a new Mac that can't be downgraded, find out firewire or what have you is no longer supported, rinse & repeat.

    Big Sur update

@fisherking: most of my DAW work is done outside Logic, Other DAW's etc are much less compatible with Big Sur.

    Big Sur update

Thanks, David. I am still on Mojave and will be until I am forced to upgrade. Wondering if I should skip Catalina altogether. I will wait until at least version .4 of Big Sur. Over the years I have noticed that .4 means the kinks are ironed out.(and then the whole thing starts over again...). Leaving the 32-bit world means $1200 to replace obsolete hardware, so I am not in a hurry. I liked the shiny pill style(fake 3D) of MacOS best.

    Big Sur update

What is 'better' in Big Sur for a DAW user?
  14. I see. Thanks. That's kind of old fashioned... And if you want to get rid of a subfolder you do what?
  15. OK, great. But how? The plus button in the plugin manager only adds folders at top level, and I can't drag and drop them inside other folders. What am I missing?
