  1. Alright, I import a song from a friend, cut it up, get the samples I want, such as a guitar riff. Obviously it's not 120 BPM. I find out it's 97 BPM. I lock the track SMPTE so that when I change the project it doesn't change the tempo. Done, works fine. But when I hit flex time on it, because I'm making it a loop and the song isn't recorded to a click track so it's somewhat out of time, then it starts playing at 97 BPM, of course slowing it down. If I change the region from 120 BPM to 97 BPM obviously that slows it down to. Is there anyway to use flex time on imported files to make them into loops without slowing them down like that? Or do I have to just slow them down and then bring the tempo of the region back up to 120?
  2. Thanks, I got it to work. However it keeps wanting to default go back to syncing it through MPC instead of internal.
  3. I've set up my tap tempo to the T button on my keyboard. I import a song from a friend, I then want to get it on the grid so I lock the SMPTE, I start hitting T until it plays and then get the tempo. Once I've done that, I can't play or record. The playhead will just sit at the beginning. I've tried it with SMPTE lock off, still the same deal. I want to change the BPM of the grid, not the song I imported. I don't know why it comes to a complete halt when I do this. I can even edit undo all the way back to the start of the project and it won't let me play anything. I do have an MPC MPK midi controller hooked up and that set so it will read it's controls, like play and stop, but I try it with the keyboard, same thing.
  4. Hello, Looking to upgrade my KRK Rockit 6's. The only reason they have sounded as good as they have is because I have an M-Audio SBX10 Studio Subwoofer, which is huge and takes care of all the the stuff around 80hz and under. On mine, the pair is so unmatched that matching them one is turned all the way up while the other one is barely up! But I've dealt with it. I don't like that there is not enough low end without kicking on my subwoofer, the subwoofer is a LOT and sometimes it's too much to mix with. Sounds great for recording and listening but it's hard to tame, even turned down really low it's a LOT of bass. I want at least an 8 inch speaker. I'd like to go under a grand for a pair. I looked at the Mackie 8 inch and they were high rated. Anyone have experience with those? I have a friend that has some cheap Samson 8 inch monitors and no subwoofer and his sound way better than my KRK's. Plenty enough bass to mix with. I'd be willing to go over a grand but I'm not looking for the most accurate thing in the world, I just have a home studio, I'm not making any money at it. I am looking for something with more low end so I can mix without a subwoofer.
  5. I think I have this down right, however my workflow has changed. I've always used external drives, now I've started to use my internal SSD for current projects, say 10 songs I'm working on at a time. They also sync to my Dropbox. Instead of creating new projects, I use the, "Alternatives," feature in Logic, so I have the project I wrote the song with, the demo, and the final recording all in one package. Used to, I knew to "save as," and save it on the external drive when I no longer wanted it on the internal drive, or wanted it on both. However, now I have 3 or 4 projects saved in one package. Would it be ideal to just drag and drop the package onto the external drive? Any disadvantages in that? I know that's not the way a lot of people do it, they do the save as. So that makes me wonder if there is a disadvantage to doing it that way. Also, once I'm done, should I change all my midi tracks into audio tracks? Because as of now I am having to save the instruments and sounds. I have all the boxes checked. I figure 10 years from now there could be issues with a project like that. So I've been thinking I should go through them and bounce them all to audio inside the project.
  6. They both are fine. My favorite ones I have owned have been the Fantom Drives
  7. Thanks. I've been using Command+R and it ask how many copies I want. It'd be nice if they found a way to do that. I really like to write a whole song just using the first 8 bars and muting as I go and then arranging at the end. I never did it that way before until I tried Abelton and I realized that was a good way to write, I also know Steve Vai writes his music in a similar way.
  8. sorry for the typos, my Mac changes the word if I misspell and it thinks it's another.
  9. No, the audio will be recorded "dry", and the compressor is applied both on what you hear (software monitoring) while speak/record, and on what is played back afterwards. So you still can change compressor settings (or even change the compressor plugin to use another type of plugin) after the facts in case of need. So, basically its like using the outboard compressor, in the sense that I can hear it while recording, but I have the option to take it away? Good. That is the reason I don't use my outboard compressor to hear my voice in a more even way, because I can't change it after I do it. I know not to over compress but my ears are still developing with attack and release, and that's where I get afraid of anything being permeant. I have recorded a song before and thought it sounded fine only to hear that the release was too long later on.
  10. Hello, I know this is a total noob question; I am doing some classes online where I am doing screen capture and speaking at the same time. I compress after the fact for the final product. However, I want to hear the compressor while I'm recording so I can hear myself more evenly in the headphones while recording. Mostly because when I compress after the fact I find out I'm too close to the microphone and start hearing my lips smack because they get turned up in the compression. I'd like to hear if that's going on while recording. But if I record with the plug in already on the channel and turned on, does it affect my actual recording? In other words, when I'm done, can I delete the compressor on the track and then put another one up in order to get the finished product? Or will recording with the plug in on affect the recording even if I delete it? Any other tips would be helpful for voice over. I am new to voice over. I do have an outboard compressor however I know that affects the signal for good. I am recording with a Rode NT-1000 into an ART MPA ii pre amp, out to a Saffire Pro 40. What are some opinions on attack and release time as well as ratio? Also my pre amp has an impedance knob, I have it turned to the middle to 600 because I have no idea what it really does. I've turned it a few times and the differences are too subtle for me to really hear what to choose.
  11. Hello, I am wondering if there is anyway while writing songs to create a four bar loop, but then create an 8 bar loop and have each track loop its own amount of bars instead of having to copy and paste the 4 bar loop to make it 8 bars so I can loop the other part. I like to write my songs in a similar fashion as Abelton Live. Where I basically just stack everything and then arrange it later. Thanks in advance for the help.
  12. Hello, I do not have Pro Tools, however I will be needing to export to Pro Tools for mastering. Should I record this EP with .Wave or .AIFF? I have always used .Wave. I am also interested to know if I can test the export by downloading Pro Tools Free. I know it's limited to 16 tracks but I'd kinda like to make sure everything works before I send it off.
