  1. Thanks guys for the good advice about the Ram.That's quite a saving. Will order. I'm so excited! Can't wait!!!
  2. Hi, this forum was so useful about a year and a half ago when I was thinking of getting Logic and my 1st Mac. It's taken ages to deliberate but I am about to order and I'd be so greatful if you can you let me know if you see something wrong with my list! Some background: this will be my first computer software (I have always used a 'stand alone' machine -Yam AW4416) I mainly record using live instruments/vox/keyboard but fancy a few library instruments too. I want something that will give me no hassle, is fast and as future proof as I can make it. Luckily, through waiting and saving hard I do have a reasonable budget. After careful studying of this fabulous Forum and elsewhere (but not as much as here) here's my list to order this weekend: 3.6 Ghz 8 Core 9th generation imac with Intel Core i9 processor with turbo boost up to 5 GGz 32 gb 2666MHz DDR4 memory 2 TB SSD Storage Logic Pro X Presonus Quantum interface Komplete Kontrol S88 Mk 2 Keyboard which includes Komplete Select Library Samsung T5 1TB External SSD to put my music projects on Samsung X5 2TB External SSD to put music libraries on The latest edition of David Nahami's superb book (I've taken so long my previous copy is now out of date!) I'm hoping this is my all in one solution to get learning and get going. See anything I've missed - any mistakes here? Anything to watch out for? Matt (UK)
  3. That's so helpful. Thank you 3pl and everyone.
  4. Thanks Mike - especially about 'Time Machine'. When you're new to something it's so easy to miss the essential. I've been mixing up 'Time Machine' up with apples external 'Airport' wi-fi device! Out of interest, which external disc do you use for your 'Time Machine' back up and what size? The imac I am getting is a 1TB SSD machine. Having listened to advice from here on another thread, I aim to purchase a 3 or 4 TB external Thunderbolt SSD for my music projects and possibly a 500GB Thunderbolt SSD for any instrument libraries. Since it's largely to be left alone, will it matter whether the 'Time Machine' back up disc is Thunderbolt?
  5. Thanks so much David, lagerfeldt and KC. I really appreciate your advice and I will leave my imac well alone to do its job as intended. What a great Forum this is. I have found it so useful and will consider it an essential aid as I move forward.
  6. Oh, I see - that's good to know. I certainly don't want to be slowed down, that's for sure.
  7. Thanks for your help KC and lagerfeldt, that's really useful to know. I guess antivirus or Firewalls would slow logic down and be a general pain?
  8. Hi, excuse this basic question but I am about to buy my first imac for use with logic and am wondering about the Internet and antivirus. I have not used computer software for recording before and never an iMac for anything. I remember in the old days advice that you should never use the internet on the same machine as your recording software but I can't believe this is still the case since it would be necessary for software updates, file sharing etc. So my question is: do I need antivirus software on my new imac and if so which? I have seen advice on some forums recommending no antivirus software at all but I find it hard to believe macs are totally safe from attack and after all this saving up and anticipation would hate to have my new pride and joy ruined. Hoping you can help with any internet suggestions and again my apologies but I am right at the start....
  9. Thanks Wolfie, that's really helpful. I've just had a look at the Samsung T5 and it looks just right! There's so many Lacie's I'm a bit confused as to which one to go for. I suppose I really need Thunderbolt 3 since that's compatable with the imac?
  10. Hi everyone, after over a year of reading and re reading Davids book, searching and researching on this forum, trying to keep up to date with new developments, and saving up.... I am happy and excited to be about to take the plunge and buy my first mac and logic, this is after years and years of using a Yamaha 4416 standalone hard disc recorder. My choice as it stands is to go for the new 4.2 GHz quad-core with 32GB ram and 1TB ssd. In addition I'm inclined to go for the new Presonus Quantum as my interface. Any thoughts on this are appreciated but what I'm really stuck on is which external SSD drives to use and how many? I think from having researched on here I need at least 2 external SSD's- one for my projects and one for big instrument or music library software. I'd probably back up on a USB stick or Dropbox or such like. The advice and discussion about internal and external drives has helped immensly but which actual external SSD's should I go for? I see there are some on the Apple site (Lacie's) but I know you guys will have more to say. I guess I should go for Thunderbolt since the imac has the outputs. I'm no expert so possibly one that has casing included might be best for me. I know I need 7200rpm and at least 4TB. Looking forward to hearing from you all....then I can place my order
