  1. Try a MOTU AudioExpress (~$250). I run this over USB and it works well.
  2. You'll have to make some stereo compromises but you can treat each channel of each stereo output as a separate output. If you have theee stereo pairs of outputs, then you have six mono outputs (think of them as A, B C, etc). To assign a channel to an output, assign its stereo output to the lair that contains your desired output, then pan the channel left or right. If you want output E, for example, assign the channel to stereo output 3 and pan it left.
  3. Edit the MP3 in another application (Logic, Audacity...) to include only the desired portion and use the shorter file.
  4. If you don't need the rig to be performance-ready in the near future, go ahead and do the combo update. If it seems buggy, you can always format and do a clean install. I've upgraded OS X without a clean install and it always seems fine. If you have a backup that you could restore from, I would risk it.
  5. I would try cloning your MainStage partition to another drive, installing it in your MacBook and trying the upgrade to see if it suits your needs. I've had no problems with Sierra and MainStage but it seems every situation is unique with regards to hardware performance.
