Hi all. I've been working on my orchestra template and have a related questions about routing audio from Virtual Instruments to stems (in regards to bussing, input monitoring, and soloing instruments). The goal is to be able to compose through my Stems, then simply record enable the stems when I am ready to Print them.
As an example of what I would like to accomplish for my Woodwind section, I would have Stems for:
1. Individual Instrument Tracks (ie PICCOLO AUDIO or FLUTE AUDIO etc.)
2. Sub-Section TRACKS (ie HIGH WOODS, LOW WOODS)
3. Section TRACKS (Ie ALL WOODS)
So... To achieve this I routed my Software Instruments via busses to Audio Tracks (ie PICCOLO AUDIO), then bussed from those audio tracks to each Sub-Section Stem Track (ie HIGH WOODS STEM), then bussed from Sub-Section Stems to Section Stems (ie ALL WOODS STEM) as well as to a Section Reverb Track (ie WOODS VERB). The VERB TRACK busses back to the ALL WOODS STEM to allow for Wet/Dry fader control. I need to have Input monitor selected on all Audio tracks and Stems to hear anything. This was a suggested routing from one of my UCLA Ext. instructors (Who is using DP) as an efficient way of being able to print stems quickly and have the files live in the session for easy reference ... but in Logic pro X it doesn't seem to work.
Example of my routing.
Piccolo instrument ---> Bus 1 PICCOLO AUDIO TRACK (input monitor on) *Out* to --> Bus 7 HI-WOODS STEM (input monitor on) *Out* to --> Bus 6 ALL-WOODS STEM (This is a SUMMING STACK) which finally goes *Out* to --> STEREO OUT
also ... (Bus 1 PICCOLO AUDIO TRACK *Sends* to ==> Bus 10 WINDS VERB which also goes *Out* to --> Bus 6 ALL-WOODS STEM then *Out* to --> STEREO OUT) -- for Wet/Dry reverb fader control
The Problem: I can't solo software instruments properly.
When I SOLO a software instrument (ie Piccolo) while composing, I hear nothing because the stems that its routing through become muted. I have tried using the SOLO EXEMPT function on each stem to make them immune from the Soloing of my software instruments but then the other instruments (ie Oboe) will not mute at all. Soloing any software instrument has no effect on muting the others.
Is there any guidance you can provide on how to route efficiently and still achieve the ability to compose through the stems, without giving up the ability to solo individual software instruments as expected? Thanks for your help!
Sorry for the lengthy description -- I hope it is somewhat clear.
