  1. hi all, i also posted this on apple.com/support/logic if you guys have any ideas, please advise? i use logic pro x for audio recording in my studio. i have a usb audio interface (18in 18out). when i have the macbook at home, obviously the interface is not connected, as it is at the studio. when opening logic at home, i obviously then have to use built-in-speakers. i would like to change some setup and routing in some of my projects, and work on some templates, preparing their routing and such while at home, so that they will be ready upon arrival at studio. obviously i cannot, since the macbook is not aware of the disconnected device. is there any way to simulate/fake the device, or force the macbook to "think" the device is there, so that i may do the setups/changes/preparations at home without the actual device?
  2. Hi all, thanks for the responses. From all the responses so far, I then understand that the answer is still: "oops, it's not possible" . . Hope that Logic will address this in future JacobP, thanks for your two suggestions as well, but, ya, both of them don't allow me to playback and/or record MIDI with a group of players while also working on mix setup Folks, just a follow-up on this: I've seen some posts about recording a "band" who are all using MIDI instruments at the same time. I understand the MIDI channel setup which is referred to there, but, so, my question is: if you cannot hear/record a MIDI instrument if its channel is not selected, then how does that multi-MIDI recording actually "WORK"? Only ONE of the channels is going to be returning the audio of whichever instrument. Anyone have any ideas on that? I'm wondering if that setup may not have a hidden solution in it somewhere.
  3. I have exactly the same question danjags has: And the answers here don't seem to solve my issue. I will give a step-by-step procedure to clarify: 1) . Setup 8 Drum Channels to record the drummer 2) . Setup a bass channel to record the bassist 3) . Setup a MIDI channel to record the piano (software instrument in LPX - let's say then steinway grand). Setup all audio channels to record, as well as the MIDI channel. So, me and the guys are talking through the song, adjusting levels and settings for all as we go along, getting ready to do a few takes. I am pianist/engineer, so I am in the control room with the MAC and the KEYBOARD. Drummer in own room, bassist in own room - sometimes a guitarist or vocalist or something also added. So now I want to change a setting on the bass, for example, doesn't matter what, maybe more level through their aux to the drummer, or maybe more fader to the control room for me, whatever, I want to change something. The moment I start working on the bass channel and either purposefully, or accidentally "focus" the track (the bass track) - and by focus, I mean "select" - logic calls it focus...then there is no more sound from the piano/keyboard when I turn to play it. I then have to turn back to the MAC, select (focus) the MIDI channel, and only then may I hear input from the piano/keyboard software instrument. Sure, you may scoff and say: "don't accidentally 'touch' the channel and select it", but sometimes there is a specific reason for having to select it, or multiples. Say the drummer wants something (reverb, eq, levels) on multiple of his channels (let's use toms)...then I would normally swipe the mouse across the three toms channels, and make the single change (which is automatically done across all three selected channels, as it should be for ease of use), but, because I have selected the toms track....my piano is gone again! again! again! again....and again! this happens all the time!!! argh, it's SO frustrating. It slows down the session immensely, especially in a case where piano, for example, only comes in after an intro or a first vers....do a quick setting for the bassist, everyone plays, 18 seconds later, when I have to play, I do...but woah! - no sound. OH YES!!! Go back to the MAC, select the MIDI channel, restart and everyone has to do the intro or verse or whatever again. I believe I am painting a good picture of the frustration I experience with this? Could anyone advise?
  4. thnx so, just to be sure....it has nothing to do with bus names, but then rather bus numbers?
  5. Wow! This is strange. Every time I seem to run into an issue with Logic, or my Apple products, it seems that I'm the only person on the planet with that problem Can hardly believe that no-one has any clue about this...very strange that it is missing from documentation too...lol....so frustrating
  6. When importing a Logic Project, one is presented with a window (as in attached image) which gives you certain options to select/deselect for the import. KEEP BUS NAME is the one of concern. I've searched the web, searched Apple communities and Logic forum, and searched the helpfile.....there is NO instruction or explanation of what this does, and how exactly it works. In fact, on the page explaining some of the columns in the Import Project process, the columns before and after "KEEP BUS NAME" are discussed, but that specific column is suspiciously "MISSING" in die images and explanation. See attached screenshot to see which column I am referring to. Also, here is the link to the actual user's manual page which discusses this import feature, and note how that "KEEP BUS NAMES" is simply not present. Https://Help.Apple.Com/Logicpro/Mac/10.3/Index.Html#/Lgcpce085447Https://Help.Apple.Com/Logicpro/Mac/10.3/Index.Html#/Lgcpce085447Https://Help.Apple.Com/Logicpro/Mac/10.3/Index.Html#/Lgcpce085447Https://Help.Apple.Com/Logicpro/Mac/10.3/Index.Html#/Lgcpce085447 I understand that this either "keeps" the bus names the same, or "doesn't keep" them, depending on whether or not you click the button, BUT, my concerns are: which one means what? Does "KEEP" mean that the bus names which are already in the current project are going to be kept, OR does it mean the names that are in the imported project are going to be kept, and if so, what happens to the current projects ones which are similar? are they merged/deleted? if merged...***? if note, so what happens. Also, no matter which option you choose, the interface always comes up with this question about creating a new aux by adding or not, and, also with that, no matter which option one chooses, it does not seem to make any difference to what actually HAPPENS after the import. Could anyone advise WHERE one should go to get the explanations/instructions on that selection column? Thanks all
  7. If I were to purchase an airport extreme (*or maybe it's called the time capsule) 2TB, would I be able to use it as a "normal" external drive, and have logic record to it/playback from it as a standard hard drive, or is wi-fi too slow/unreliable?
  8. Hi triplets, thanks for the response. I link to a screenshot to show what I'm seeing. https://app.box.com/s/3ywr66pc3aam01np16o44dtcaggpuky7 You will see that the Violins 1 Comp track "believes" there should be audio between measures 33 and 129, but there is not even a layer below the comp track for that. Bearing in mind...we did record that layer, and it was present in previous versions. Only last Wednesday upon attempting to record additional parts, did we "suddenly" see this phenomenon.
  9. No-one? Can't believe that there's no way to "re-link" the region? Or, has no-one come across an issue like this yet?
  10. Hi all, In another post I discussed "loosing" audio. Have discovered in the meantime what the issue was, and attempted to fix it. This, however is a further question. There are two things to which I would love some advice: 1) I have a comp track in logic, with, let say, 5 layers of comping. I've used a little piece from each layer to create the final comp track. Yet, when I open this project in Logic, and flip open the comp track, it shows, eg.: layer 4 has no audio. This means that when the comp track gets to the part in the music where that audio should sound...there is nothing. The actual region is still shown, but that region on the layer also shows no audio. How do I find out to WHICH audio file that region points/links? Maybe that file is damaged, and I could save it with an editor like Audacity or such, or even link to ANOTHER audio file in the place of this one, if need be? 2) The other thing that happens is I have a comp track with, again, say 5 layers of comping. I've done the same as in point (1) above, BUT, instead of SHOWING the layer and region on that layer, in this case, the entire comp track shows all there is to see, BUT, eg.: layer 4 of the comping is TOTALLY MISSING! When I say totally missing, I mean: there is no layer - NOT: there is a layer with no region, I mean LAYER 4 does not exist anymore! The COMP track shows that there is supposed to be audio, as the comp track has a region there (empty, sure), but in the layers, the actual layer where this audio/region should come from, is not there at all. WTF!??! Any ideas folks?
  11. thnx maceasy....do you mean that your suggested process may even "fix" the "missing" comp-track info, or at least show those comp-layers again?
  12. Anybody have any ideas about the "missing" comp track layers? I realize that Logic may not be able to read some of the audio fles, but surely it should say so/warn me that they are missing, not just remove the layer and leave no data in its place? Also, anybody know of any reliable way to correct the AIF file headers, since it seems some of them may be damaged, and I'm hoping header replacement/correction may return some of the data. Lastly, in the meantime, any thoughts on how I could get that project to force-open, and not get "stuck" on the files that are giving it problems? Thanks for the help/advice/comments thus far all.
  13. Thanks for the input, much appreciated. After maceasys comments, I'm considering doing the projects on the SSD, or on external USB 1TB. The main reason I got the SD, was that this meant NO extra/external stuff moving around when taking my Air somewhere and wanting to mess around in audio Yet, obviously this level of chaos is not useable.
  14. Hey there, Thanks again for the reply. Yeah, have a 1TB external USB drive. After reading your post, I also went online and started reading up about the difference between SSD and SD. I understand more about what you are saying, as I realize the speed of the SD may be an issue. This also explains why my video editing is working fine on the drive...since with the video editing I'm only reading from
