Depends on what synth types you use. If you use mostly soft synths and effects, then go for a powerful processor. From my experience 1 core speed is what matters most when you use a lot of processing on single channel, thus i've chosen 6 core i7 8086k (4,3-5 GHZ single core speed)- and it works perfectly well for me. And by the way i work in 96 kHz. If you plan to use mainly samples and samplers with huge libraries (ie Kontakt), then go for RAM in the first place. From my own experience - 16 Gb of RAM is almost overkill, i never need more, though i use Kontakt libraries in every project (2-4 instances). My projects contain in general about 40 tracks. I use a lot of soft synths and lots of processing.
