  1. Thanks fisherking. Good input. and yeah, I already upgraded the drive to an SSD. I'm not in for that much minimalist pain...
  2. Hello All. My normal setup is a M1 Mac Mini with all the latest updates, Ventura, LP 10.7.3, tons of plugins and virtual instruments, samples, on and on. All working well for the most part. I’m traveling to Asia for a month next week to visit my wife’s family. I can’t take my main setup so I’m trying an experiment of sorts. I want to purposely limit myself to an all stock LP setup on a low power computer so I can focus on songwriting and production and not get sucked into the Vortex of shiny things and plugins. I may play around with GarageBand as well. I’m hoping this will help me break out of some bad habits, form some good new habits and improve my skillset. So I bought a 2011 MacBook Pro 13” for $75 on eBay and it’s in surprisingly good shape. I upgraded it with 16gb RAM and 512 SSD. It runs great! So for around $125 I have an old but fully functional MacBook. But it will only run High Sierra and nothing newer as the MacOS. That limits me to LP 10.4.8. LP seems to run fine so far but I haven’t done much with it. I’ve watched a few vids on using Opencore Legacy Patcher to get Monterey running on this old Mac, which would get me to LP 10.7 but it seems a bit dodgy and I fear it would lead to a nightmare of LP compatibility issues and problems. Has anyone done this Opencore thing with Monterey (btw Ventura not supported yet for 2011 MPB) on an old Mac and did LP 10.7 run well? Also, does anyone have thoughts on how you would approach this kind of minimalist experiment? It’s only for a month and I can bring whatever projects I create into my main setup when I get back home. Thoughts? Thanks! Don
  3. Logic 10.7.0 M1 Mac Mini 16bg RAM Big Sur 11.6.1 I have a project that loads and uses about 10gb of my 16gb Ram - no issues with that, I can remove other resident programs it all runs fine. But over time it seems to take more and more ram despite not really growing in tracks or plugins. And then when I leave it open and put the mac into sleep, when I come back it has grown to maybe 18gb in Ram use and this machine can't swap ram/disk fast enough or efficiently despite the M1 and then it's the spinning beach ball and a forced quit of Logic. This only started happening after I went to Logic 10.7. It's happening every day now. Any ideas or is anyone else experiencing this? Thanks! Don
  4. So I tried this in a completely new project and now the Command-R function does in fact work on groups of midi notes within a region, however after hitting command R, the view in the piano roll returns to the beginning of the project, not where I repeated the notes, which I think faked me out and made me think it didn't repeat the group of notes. But it did within the region I was working on. Why would the Piano Roll view change to another section of the project? Thanks
  5. Thanks David. I checked and yes, in fact there are duplicate notes in the Event List where this issue is occurring. This is new to me because I thought the piano roll would represent any and all midi notes that exist. I went and deleted the duplicate notes in the Event List and actually found many more on other DMD kit pieces for some reason. That fixed the problem with the snare but now I'm wondering how all these superimposed midi notes got there because i didn't write them in. However I've been having another issue which could be related. The repeat function Command-R for some reason is not working on individual midi notes or groups of notes in the piano roll. It works fine on regions, though. But if I select notes in the piano roll and hit Command-R, it doesn't repeat them like it used to, it just takes the playhead back to bar 1 and I see an empty Midi region in the Piano Roll. This has happened a lot and I'm wondering if when I do this, it's actually pasting/repeating the midi notes but not displaying them in the Piano Roll, and maybe thats where the superimposed notes are coming from. Make sense? Any thoughts? Thanks for the suggestion!! Don
  6. LP 10.6.3 Mac Mini M1 16gb Hello LP Wizards. I'm at my wits end trying to figure out what is happening with a snare Midi note velocity. I have two regions with the same DMD midi pattern on them. One region the snare plays exactly 5db louder than the other. No automation anywhere on the track or in the midi region editor, the midi notes are exactly the same 110 velocity across both regions. And it's only the snare, no other parts of the drum kit. I can create new regions and write in new parts and this doesn't happen. I can move the snare to a different DMD pad and change the input note - still happens. I can totally change to another electronic drum kit in the Library, the snare in that kit still has the issue. Seems something in the MIDI information is causing this maybe? But again, I'm sure there's no automation and the velocity is set the same. Any ideas? Is this related to the M1 processor, even in a stock instrument like DMD? Now, to be clear, I did drag a new snare sample onto the DMD pad, but when I clear the DMD snare pad and change to another sample, this still happens. Thanks!! Don
  7. So simple and yet I didn't think of it. Thanks again, David!
  8. Hello all. I'm using LPX 10.6.2 on an M1 Mac Mini/16gb Ram (which is awesome btw) Is there a way to assign multiple kit pieces or samples to a single DMD pad? Like two kicks to a single midi note/pad. The only way I can seem to do this is to assign different kit pieces to two different notes and then double the midi part on another note in Piano Roll. I love the DMD interface and parameter tweaks, etc. and would prefer to stay in that mode when creating kits. Thanks! Don
  9. Thanks for all the input here everyone
  10. Thanks all! I’m trying to take all this in and plot my course. I’m trying to see if I can determine which plugins I use are the biggest CPU hogs. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do that? The CPU monitor in Logic is pretty limited in functionality. My main 3rd party plugins are from waves, soundtoys, Izotope and IKmultimedia. Is there a list somewhere that rates/ranks plugins from a resource consumption perspective? Much appreciated Don
  11. iMac 27" 2017 i5 24gb RAM 1tb SSD how do I reset nvram, smc etc? Thanks!
  12. Let's see, were to begin with my symptoms and pain since going to Catalina. Dramatic increase in CPU overload errors, phantom CPU usage up to 25% when a project isn't even playing yet with no other apps/browsers open on the machine. logic crashes on opening certain projects that never crashed before the Catalina upgrade, strange midi audio sync errors. Now I must admit that I also went to Logic 10.5.1 right after going to Catalina, so maybe there's something in that combination. I was already at 10.5 on Mojave. I do use a lot of virtual instruments and plugins, but I know how to minimize CPU usage, freeze and bounce to audio, use plugins on sends vs individual tracks. I've taken all those measures and still am having big issues. Some projects I can't even get four bars of a chorus or verse to play without a CPU overload. I am beginning to resign myself to needing a more powerful machine, but want to exhaust all possibilities on this one first.
  13. Thanks for the help here. I think the machine came with High Sierra and I’d like to get back to Mojave. if I do the Cmd-R restore and it puts high Sierra on the drive, I don’t think I can update to Mojave thru system update right? That will only push me to Catalina again where I dare not tread.
  14. I could kick myself for going to Catalina from Mojave. Too many problems even with the latest Catalina update. not even talking about 32 bit apps and plugins, don't need those anymore. So I am prepared to wipe my SSD and do a fresh install of Mojave. Can anyone recommend the best way to do this? I've got all my files and projects stored on an external drive and a full time Machine backup plus been using BackBlaze.I just want to start completely fresh and reinstall Logic and everything else. Thanks! Don
