  1. All I can tell you is that I just had a very similar problem with a 2020 M1 Air running Ventura 13.6.4 to a Samsung T7 drive. I wouldn't hold my breath expecting any help from this site. My read/write speed is 670 MBs so indexing shouldn't be a problem. I finally got Logic working with the Library located on the external drive, but now 50% of the library shows up in the Library window as needing to be downloaded, despite the Sound Library Manager showing that everything is installed. It's just the usual Apple/Logic BS.
  2. I just installed 10.8.1 on my MacBook Air Ventura 13.6.4 I downloaded the entire content (but the 'Legacy and Compatibility' shows as 'not installed' for some reason - despite the fact that it shows up in the library) I moved the library to my external drive. However, when I create either a software instrument track or drummer track and open the Library around 50% of the content has a download arrow next to it. What gives? Is it because the library is on an external drive? When I click the download arrow it seems to be reading from my external drive. Is it just transferring the files back to my main drive? I right clicked the arrow and selected 'Refresh Library' but it did nothing. So I now have to click hundreds of little arrows to download what has already been downloaded or is there a quicker way to do this?
  3. I'm guessing that you are looking for recommendations for a new interface? The first decision when buying anything (a car for example) is 'budget' and 'desired features', 'reliability' and 'ease of use' may be other features that may be important to you also. Most interfaces (even the cheap little Behringer UMC204HD) are capable of recording very high quality sound in the right hands (used carefully and set correctly). Pick a budget and pick the features that you want and go for it, 'type of connection' and 'connectivity flexibility' may be important to you also. Once you have made all of these decisions the field and choice will have been narrowed down quite a bit, you may only be left with a choice between 2 or 3 models. As far a sound 'quality' goes, budget (and even mid price) interfaces tend to show their weakness in the quality of the output sound to the speakers and especially to the headphones. I think a lot of people overlook this aspect of the device and so the manufacturers and reviewers don't really focus much on this important feature of the device much.
  4. Hi, Is this an issue with all your projects (even ‘light’ ones)? I got to thinking, based on your computer specs and the Performance Meter observation during the ‘realtime’ bounce, that must be one heck of a project! However, if it is a CPU issue, the offline bounce should still complete because the macOS optimizes all resources during any given task, including CPU usage. So, if the CPU load is high, all that should really happen is that it would simply increase the time that the bounce takes and you would hear the fans kick in high, but it should still complete? It's common for CPU load to go way past 150% during an offline bounce, but when it hits a certain temperature the machine will simply throttle it back to cope. Although you are running a powerful machine, it may be worth a browse through Sweetwater’s optimization guide (if you haven't already)? macOS 10.15 Catalina Optimization Guide for Recording I would personally do a PRAM reset, and OS recovery and a Logic uninstall/ reinstall. As you are probably aware, this is Apple’s recommended procedures for troubleshooting: https://support.apple.com/en-gu/HT200260 Hope you can get this issue fixed.
  5. In your example, (1 thru 60 set) when you perform the offline bounce and then lets say it stops the bounce at 40, does it actually create a bounced file for you between the range of 1 - 40 OR does the playhead just stop dead on the screen and freeze up on you (creating no file at all)? I assume from what you have stated that a realtime bounce is working OK? If so take a look at the Performance Meters during the realtime bounce. If Logic is actually freezing up during an offline bounce I would suspect a CPU issue. But I'm not totally clear on what behavior you are getting. Have you tried doing an offline bounce of the project with all the plug ins disabled/bypassed?
  6. "a fresh install of everything"? Does this include uninstall of Logic, an OS Recovery and then a reinstall of Logic? I am imagining that you created a project with your template, named it and saved it. Then, with Logic still open, you went to your project files folder and attempted to re launch that project, but logic crashed? Or did you close Logic first and then try to re open that project and Logic failed to launch/crashed? If you shut the computer down, re start it, then open Logic and attempt to load a different project (not created with that template and which has open successfully in the past) what happens? Can you open Logic at all? If so, can you open Logic and choose 'Don't open project now', then create a new project (not using any template), record something, save and close it and then re open that project without issues?
  7. Are you doing anything different with your settings between an unsuccessful bounce and a successful bounce? Before you start, are the Start and End boxes set to the desired bounce range in the bounce settings dialog window? Have you tried ‘Realtime’ mode to see if it works? How is Logic handling bouncing regions in place, any issues with that process?
  8. Hi Sorry to hear about your issue. As des99 stated, it could well be the way with that you have your interface / interface control software set up, check this first. Are you using the 2i2 in MSD mode or have you installed Focusrite Control? He also stated that, if the interface is set up correctly, then it is potentially an issue with the way you have your input monitoring set in Logic or on the 2i2. So do a little reading and digging around regarding that. You said that you were trying to record an electric guitar using an amp simulation plug-in but then also talked about ‘software instruments’ not recording or playing, which made me wonder what is going on here. Software Instruments are not used for recording guitar. I assume that you have created an audio track and have an amp sim plug-in FX on that track? Did you create this new project using a factory template or did you choose ‘New’ and create a project from scratch? Some of the Logic factory templates have some fairly advanced routing (with aux channels and lots of buses) which may complicate the issue here a little bit if you are using one of these. My advice would be to go to Focusrite and follow through their basic installation for the 2i2 https://customer.focusrite.com/en/getstarted/begin/y8 and then download the latest Apple Logic User Guide: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/logicpro/welcome/mac If possible save it to another computer or tablet so that you can read it while working through the steps with Logic on your computer. I still keep a copy on my desktop and I’ve been using Logic for years. Once you have done this read through the ‘record your voice or a musical instrument’ section and slowly work through the steps one by one. There are so many things that could be causing your problem that the chances of someone in a forum accidentally stumbling on the correct solution could take a long time and you may become even more frustrated as you try out their suggestions. The first step in this section of the Logic manual is to ‘check hardware connections and settings’. Assuming that your audio interface is set up correctly here is a quick fix that may get you up and running: 1) Turn the main monitor knob on the 2i2 down all the way (counter clockwise), this is absolutely essential if you ever plan on plugging in a microphone in the future. 2) Plug in some headphones and turn the phones volume up just a little (adjust it to suit later, once you have established that everything is working correctly). 3) Choose an input and plug in your guitar, then set the input gain for your guitar on the 2i2 (so that it is mostly green on the ring around the gain control knob when you are playing and perhaps glow a little bit orange occasionally... when you really SLAM down on that power chord). 4) Switch the 2i2 direct monitor switch to ‘off’. 5) Open/Launch Logic. 6) In the menu bar click Logic Pro>Preferences>Audio and check that your input and output devices show that they are set to the Scarlett (I don’t know what Scarlett calls herself but I’m sure you will recognize her by name)? While you’re here check that Core Audio is Enabled and set the I/O buffer to 256... this should be fine if you have a fairly new Mac. 7) Close this window. 8) Click ‘File’ and then ‘New’ on the menu bar at the top. 9) Click ‘Audio’ then select the input (on the left side) that you are using on your interface (either 1 or 2) and then the audio output (on the right side) for your device (I think the 2i2 is called Stereo 1/2). 10) At the bottom left and right of this box you should also see the ‘name’ of your interface, it should match what we saw/set in Preferences>Audio earlier. Confirm that the name is correct. 11) Click ‘Create’. Your new project should open. 12) On the left side of your monitor is the ‘inspector’ window. You should see the Audio 1 channel strip? 13) Click on the Audio FX box. 14) Select: Amps and Pedals>Amp Designer>Mono 15) You should see a window with a pretty picture of a Pseudo Vox AC amp head? 16) For now just use this Default pre set... it’s ‘British’... so you can’t go wrong! LOL 17) Close the window. 18) Go back to the main window on the right (the ‘arrange’ window) and select the ' R ' button and the' I ' button on the Audio 1 track lane header. The ' I ' will turn orange and the ' R ' should flash solid red? 19) Now, when you play your guitar you should be able to hear it through the phones connected to your 2i2? If not, either I’m useless at explaining things (highly probable) or get back to the forum. 20) To start recording press ' R ' on your keyboard. To stop recording press the space bar. 21) If you are over 21 this is a good time to have a beer... either as a celebration that it worked or because you are frustrated as hell. If under 21, have a Coke (and a smile). Remember though, drink responsibly!
  9. Folks move projects around from different DAW’s all the time. Once you both get the process figured out it is pretty straightforward but writing the whole process down in a ‘post’ reply (both from LP to PT and back again) might get a little wordy. Search around on YouTube and there are some great videos that will show you how to perform this operation in both directions so that you don't have any glitches like this (there are also some 'not quite so' concise videos too, so dig around). It's important that you both follow the steps correctly when you export the project to avoid issues like this. Perhaps start with ‘Export from Logic Pro to Pro Tools like a champ!’ by David Chamberlain and MusicTechHelpGuy (who is primarily a Logic user) has a very detailed video on PT to LP. This article may also be of interest/help: https://www.pro-tools-expert.com/production-expert-1/2019/5/30/how-to-move-sessions-and-projects-from-one-daw-like-pro-tools-to-another-like-studio-one-or-logic-pro I’m sure that there is also a section on ‘exporting projects to other DAW’s’ in David’s book? I would highly recommend getting it (I have the LP9 version and should really upgrade to the latest). Did you know that ‘Exciter’ by Depeche Mode was recorded using 3 different DAW’s (PT, Logic and Cubase) over 20 years ago! It was actually done to save time.
  10. OK... I swear that one of these days I'm going to learn to read. I too was looking in Logic Preferences. That OS Recovery that I did a few days ago obviously re set all these and I had forgotten that I had switched all that stuff off 2 years ago when I got the machine. Duh
  11. philthegreek, did anyone ever solve this for you? I just re installed Logic 10.6.3 and have started to receive on screen notifications again. e.g. if I click control/option/command 'L' I get a message that says 'Auto Set Locators On'. I don't need to see this message. Preferences/General/Notifications is all clear and there is noting to set or select here. thanks anyone.
  12. “If I were to switch the Channel Mode on that track/channel from stereo to mono, what would the total outcome be if I just left the stereo versions of those plugins, instead of switching to the Mono versions”? Try it and listen to the results (use headphones). Import a stereo audio file (preferably one that has a wide stereo mix) and place Space Designer (stereo) on it. Listen to it and then select mono channel mode, what do you hear? How many output meters do you see? It’s still stereo. The stereo field may actually narrow slightly, but it’s still stereo. Leaving the channel mode in mono, remove Space Designer (stereo) and load SD (mono). What do you hear? How many output meters do you see? One! and the difference in sound is night and day. This is your answer, loading a stereo plug-in onto a stereo track and then switching to mono channel mode results in the track output remaining as stereo and the effect acts as it does when placed onto a mono track in 'm to s' mode. The effect plug in choice can vary wildly from mono/stereo/mono to stereo or dual mono depending on a variety of factors. If you have a track that was intentionally recorded as mono and you want to keep it that way then choose mono effect (if that choice is available). If it is not, then that track will most likely become stereo. I wouldn’t worry about CPU usage if your mac is recent and decent. However, it’s good practice to cut down on using the exact same effect on many tracks by using buses/aux channels/summing track stacks etc. as much as possible. Hope this helps.
  13. Simply switching Channel Mode from Stereo to Mono does not make a stereo track mono. If the region shows two waveforms it is still a stereo track. If you import a 2 channel file (e.g. your mp3) into Logic, Logic will create a stereo track for that material. If you play this track and then select the channel mode to ‘mono’ you will hear it through the stereo out channel strip and (using a 2 speaker system) as summed to mono but this is still a stereo track. So how to make a true mono track from a stereo one? If you try to bounce a stereo track to a new track Logic will always create a new stereo track. You have to beat it into submission by doing the following: 1) set the stereo track that you are bouncing to mono channel mode, 2) ensure that there are no stereo plug ins on the channel, and 3) set the output on that track to a mono output (e.g. Output 1 or Output 2). Then, when you do the bounce in place, a new ‘mono’ track will be created. You can then re-set that new tracks output to ‘stereo out’ and it will be a true mono track containing all the material from the original tracks left and right channels. You will notice that the waveform in the region has now become a single waveform, not 2 separate ones. Even if you create a mono track and then drag a stereo file on to it, Logic will make the track stereo. This is actually an annoyance to some users as many DAW’s allow the user to import stereo material and then give the user a choice as to whether to place it on a stereo or mono track. If you choose mono it will sum both the left and right side material for you during the import.
  14. I don't think you read my last post! But thanks anyway.
  15. Thanks for everyone’s input. I consider this topic now solved and closed. Here is my fix for anyone who is having a similar issue. As David’s suggestion of checking Logic by running it from a ‘new user’ account worked, I (and he) figured that this was a user account (or Logic preferences) glitch and that LP 10.6.3 does indeed run fine on macOS 10.15.7 on my particular machine. After having performed the usual back ups I performed an OS recovery, but this did not fix the issue. Then I simply deleted Logic and re installed it from the app store. This did fix the issue. I have since deleted the new user account that I had created as it is not required. I also read through the latest ‘If Logic Pro isn’t working' info. at apple https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200260 which is a good place to start for anyone having bugs/issues etc. Some other info that might help folks who are having glitches (or plan on contacting Apple, who appear to be happy to help, even if your machine is out of warranty): I spoke with an Apple tech, who then spoke with the ‘Pro Apps’ support team in Ireland. They simply stated that, unless I was running the latest macOS and a current (and up to date) Apple app. they could not offer any support as they only support problems while using the current OS, working with the current version of the Apple software. They also stated that third party software/plug ins are a common source of problems and suggested that I run Logic without using them. I think most of us know this to be the case anyway, but it’s always good to keep in mind. Especially if we install a piece of software and get the ‘this software is from an unknown developer, would you still like to install this software’? window when installing new software. I don’t know if CleanMyMac was the source of the issue in this instance (I guess not because I haven't used it in ages) but, I had a conversation with another very knowledgeable Apple tech in the UK last year who highly recommended NOT using CMM (even though it is for sale through the Apple App store, does comply with Apple’s security protocols and MacPaw is considered an approved developer), but I will be removing it anyway. I also plan on reverting back to my personal ‘broken‘ rule of ONLY using my machine for audio/music production. Keeping my Sound Library, Projects and Loops on separate external drives, no internet browsing, and using my old (but still very capable) laptop for general computer duties. WiFi will be also be turned off (unless I need to update plug ins or do other audio related task that can’t be performed any other way). Thanks.
