  1. Thanks Triplets - I was starting to get an inferiority complex over this, it’s definitely a hard thing to master and was thinking about how embarrassing it must be for mediocre singers who go to a studio and have to do a million takes in front of someone - definitely an ego popper I would imagine for some people, thank god I’m on my own in my bedroom!
  2. I know this is like asking what length is a piece of string but I’ve been wondering if I am just awful or do all singers require a million takes/comps. I can’t seem to sing more than a couple of lines perfectly maximum. I’m sure there are talented people out there who can sing a whole song through in one take with no comps needed, so, I’m curious to hear your wild guesses of how many takes you would expect a singer to sing for a five minute song. That is, how many comps would be needed. I’m not a singer by the way, I’ve just recently started making my own vocals.
  3. Is there a way to select the exact same color for sections, for example I’m trying to color the verses all the same color. However, if I go to my first verse and try to use the exact same color block from the color chart it shows up as a different color at the arrangement marker. Not a big deal, but it would make seeing things a little easier if I were able to use the same color for certain sections.
  4. So, I have a vocal region that I’m happy with but can’t seem to replicate the vocal by re recording. I want to start a new project and use that vocal region in a new version of the song. I realize that I could use track alternatives to do this but I want to start with a clean slate - no hidden automation etc , just that one vocal region....how do I transfer only that one region into a new project? Edit - I also want to transfer any automation/effects attached to that region. Thank you
  5. Thanks for that Triplets, that’s what I thought but wanted to be certain I wasn’t going to damage anything.
  6. I’ve got access to a nice condenser mic and I want to run it through an external mic preamp into my Apogee duet bypassing the preamp in the Duet using only it’s converters. I’m trying to remember extremely important advice I got a while back before plugging anything in.... from what I remember I should apply 48v in Maestro “only” if I’m going directly into the Duet. However, from what I remember if I apply 48v in the Duet (Maestro software) “and” 48v on the external preamp I could blow the preamp as it’s not designed to take power. So, am I right in thinking I should turn off 48v in Maestro software and only apply the 48v button on the external preamp? Cheers
  7. Thanks for that David. This gets me thinking about seeing NS10s in a lot of studios and reading about how crappy they sound, but if you can get a decent mix out of them then you are good to go. Re. Your book - really awesome! In this internet age sometimes it’s nice to disconnect and go old school, grab a book and relax and for me your book has been my go-to resource for anything Logic - even without following the lessons (im too A.D.D) there are so many great nuggets in there - a lot of work went into writing that - much respect!
  8. Thanks for that David - yes, I was aware that it needs to sound good on various systems and this is purposely not a song with a ton of tracks so I can figure things out easier. However, I’m confused at what o should be aiming for though good monitors and good headphones - I’m hearing every detail well on the HD650s and I understand cheaper headphones won’t translate as well, so, is it a case of getting it to sound well on shitty headphones over good headphones and if so will it sound “wrong” on good mixing headphones? My concern is that it might be a losing battle if the cheaper headphones themselves aren’t capable of bring out detail. So, are you saying focus in on elements that sound muddy on the cheaper headphones and add gain or whatever even if these elements sound exaggerated in the HDs? Side note.....last night I dug out my Apple Pro Training book -“ Logic Pro X, Professional Music Production” and the authors name rang a bell.....turns out to be you!! Congrats David on having what’s probably the best selling book on Logic!!!
  9. So, I’m listening back to a mix on a pair of HD650 headphones and hear every detail, all sounds good. However, when I switch to a lesser pair of headphones (VModa) everything sounds muddy. Since most people would be listening on less than great headphones is there anything I should be doing to cater to that? My thoughts are if it sounds great on the HD650s then that’s all I should be aiming for. Should I add an exciter or whatever on the track. The track is only bounced and no mastering done - will mastering help?
  10. Triplets, specs are 2013 MBP, 2.6GHz intel core 17 Memory 16gigs 1 TB storage....more than enough than I use it for - just Logic and as a novice I don’t have any projects with more than about 20 tracks and very few projects done - I still have 700 gigs left. Cool David - yes, I left it idle but playing tracks over and over for an hour or so. Why should I be concerned about letting it go to sleep? I never shut it down, I pretty walk away and let it sleep with projects open but saved.
  11. Haven’t been doing anything on the computer for over an hour but I left a track playing over and over again during that time while Ive been doing stuff around the house then I got a system error message. Googled it and said I might not have enough processing power or running too many tracks and plugins and might have other applications open? I’m using a maxed out MacBook Pro, no other applications open and only.....four tracks playing!! A little eq and compression on the tracks but that’s it. It was just a a simple question of closing the the error message and all is well but it has me concerned that there might be problems coming soon.....is this anything to worry about. This computer is only used for logic and iTunes, that’s it and not a bunch of files stored on it at all.
  12. Thanks Triplets....is it possible to zip a bounced file and zip it on a phone....never zipped a file before?
  13. I’ve read David’s description of how to upload an audio file to the site - I’m not very computer savvy, but David talks about sending a “logic file”. I’m not on a computer as I don’t have internet service in my new place yet. I think the only way to send an audio file right now is to bounce the file to desktop and airdrop it to “files” on my iPhone ....would that still be considered a logic file, and if so, how would I send that from the phone?
  14. Thanks Jacob, but that seems to assume you are on a computer and it refers to a “logic file”......not sure if after I bounce the file then airdrop to “files” on my phone if that would be considered a logic file? I would have to send from my phone as I don’t have internet set up in my new place.
