  1. Hey all, I'm toying with the idea of recording a sound fx library. I have the ability/opportunity to record audio at 192kHz, but am wondering just how useful and/or practical this would be in the grand scheme of things. In my 3 years as a sound designer (albeit for casino and slot games) files that were over 48kHz/24-bit were actually more trouble than they were worth, though I realize this is likely due to my soundcard not being completely up to snuff (thanks, Creative Labs! ~rollseyes~). Yes, full disclosure, I did sound design/composing professionally for 3 years with a sound card from the Soundblaster library. Never again. Wasn't my choice, anyway. Anyway... when you're looking for a new sound library, how many of you really care or go for 192 or even 96k sample rate, given the choice?
  2. I really, really tried to like Sonar, and X1 was a step in the right direction, but holy mother of god, the midi editing alone was enough to drive you mad. When I'm in the midi editor window (that ALWAYS opens up to the same small size, no matter how many times I resize it), and I CTRL+A to Select All, don't select midi from other tracks!!!
  3. Hey all, As the subject line reads, it DEFINITELY has been a while. I remember frequenting these boards every single day for years while I was still learning Logic. This place was the first place I posted about my first paid sound gig ever; recording location audio on a feature-film set. Wow, that was over 4 years ago... how time flies! Back in the summer of 2010, I got a regular, full-time job as a sound designer and composer for a casino gaming company. Unfortunately, they used PCs for everything, so I was stuck with Sonar, Reason, and Sound Forge. Both Reason and Sound Forge have been invaluable tools, but I don't think there's anyone on this planet who could ever get me interested in Sonar; that DAW is my mortal enemy. Not having to use Logic day-in, day-out, I fell away from it. Always kept it installed, recording some things from time to time, but in general, I barely touched it. I never came here anymore, either to post or to read. Well, as of March 7th, I'm leaving my job there. I love it and everything, but my fiancée got a REALLY great job in Quebec, the next province over, so we're moving. I'm doing a bit of contract work on the side as well as teaching game audio as an instructor at the school I graduated from, but other than that, I'm jobless! With the work I am doing, however, I'm digging right back in to this wonderful DAW we all know and love, and will probably be here a lot more often, not that anyone cares. I do wish to impart some helpful knowledge with the rest of you, and maybe others could join in and put in their own two-cents worth. Basically, while working as a sound designer, I've learned... You can never, truly, make it sound more 'orange'. The client is always right, unless your boss thinks otherwise. If you can recreate a sound made from a game designer's mouth (and exactly how they performed it, minus spit), you've earned your weekly pay. You can never have enough Christopher Walken when you're recording lines in the sound booth. Being salaried means never having to say 'I'll work overtime!' (mostly because you'll just have to anyway, since that project isn't going to finish itself).
  4. Yeah, what's I'd like to see here would be a section of your own, personal control panel that shows a list of the threads you've chosen to bookmark. Needlessly replying to a thread just to keep tabs on it creates unnecessary and often pointless posts. These would also be sorted by latest post, descending to the oldest and least active thread. Iit would be fantastic if it actually showed how many posts have been made since you last visited the thread in question, as well. The forums at www.somethingawful.com are a prime example of the clearest, most user-friendly forums possible. Content aside (which I love anyway, but that's neither here nor there), they've really gotten it down to perfection. Be warned, if you're not a member, those forums look like garbage with all of the ads. Those go away once you sign up. Any other SA forum goons here?
  5. Ok, update! My local retailer said that they'd send it off for repair, as I'm within the year of my warranty. So they lent me a Firestudio Project. The Firewire light turns blue, which pretty much rules out my mac or my cable (though I ruled out my mac by testing my own firestudio with my roommate's mac.) No matter what I do, even though the light is blue, I've updated the Firmware and rebooted my system, nothing works. No sound. I went into Prefs > Sound, and chose the Firestudio for Input and Output... still nothing. Made sure my logic settings were now using the firestudio for in and out... still nothing (as in the VU meters won't even move, despite the fact that I have an audio region clearly in my audio track. I went to Audio-Midi setup, and when I choose the device, it says 'This device does not support input or output'. Did 10.6.6 ruin something? I'm going to eventually post this on the Presonus boards if I don't get an answer here, but I figure you guys would be quicker. EDIT: I'm an idiot. So, during this whole process... installing the drivers, installing the updated drivers, and installing the firmware, I neglected to powercycle the actual unit while I had my computer off. All is well, though it (the headphone jack, at least... don't have my monitors to test it out with them) seems fuzzed. Ah well, it's not my permanent device. Ok, I have another question: At the end of the day, do I power down the mac and THEN the device, or the device and then the mac? What's healthier? You can be damn sure I'm doing whatever is best for everything involved from here on out. I should've been doing that all along, really. EDIT 2: Fuzziness was because the Universal Control mixer doubled up the main outs. Singled them out, and now all is well. I may now return to my enchanted and wonderful relationship with all-things Presonus.
  6. Done all of that, still nothing. You have to realize that, while I probably shouldn't have been doing that, it's been working fine coming in and out of sleep mode for the past 10 months. Still waiting on Presonus' response.
  7. Hey all, I'm running a Firestudio (just plain ol', 26x26 Firestudio) and 10.6.6, Mac Pro (it's all in my sig). Anyway, I updated to 10.6.6 over a week ago, no problems. Last night, had my computer on, no problem, all sound was fine. Today, I come home, wake the computer up (it was in Sleep mode) and the light on the FS is a constant red, not blinking, not blue... just red. Sound prefpane doesn't show anything in terms of Firestudio... it's like it's not even installed. It seems as though the unit itself doesn't recognize the connection. I'll be ordering another FW400-FW800 cable from monoprice soon, just in case (can't hurt to have another one) but does anyone have any suggestions? I'm downloading the 10.6.6 combo updater just in case, going to try that. I've installed the latest drivers on Presonus' site, and I'm waiting to hear back from them with technical help.
  8. Hey all, I'm not a fully-fledged sound designer, and at work I use 3 separate, royalty-free sound effects libraries: Warner Bros SFX Library The Hollywood Edge Library and a third one I can't remember the name of (not right in front of me) but it doesn't seem like a very high-end one. I was just curious out there if anyone had any suggestions for any good, reputable, extensive SFX libraries that you might use. We're running Sonar + Reason, so we have those at our disposal as well. So, outside of Logic 9 (which I have access to at home) any libraries that are your go-to ones?
  9. Jeez. I think I'm getting dyslexic in my old age.... No, what I meant was, we're not having a sit-down event, where people go up and give sappy speeches, and everyone has to sit and watch a slideshow, no receiving line... very casual and fun, the slowest part being the slow dances. So, it really is "Ceremony -> Dance" One think's one missed the innuendo. Luckily. Hahahahaha! Got it now.
  10. Is your fiancee a DJ, or will your fiancee be playing it on a keyboard of some type? Sorry, forgot a comma there and my grammar was a bit messed up... "...an instrumental track, for my fiance, to be playing during our wedding dance." Wow, I'm really bad at this whole 'typing' thing.
  11. Jeez. I think I'm getting dyslexic in my old age.... 12. Not our first dance together, but our second. We're having the wedding, and then just a dance with fingerfood and stuff, so no actual 'reception'.
  13. I'm pseudo-secretly writing an instrumental track for my fiancee to play during our wedding. I say 'pseudo' because I told her a looooong time ago that I would do it, and I think she's forgotten. Anyway, I'm trying to hammer out something romantic and slow-dance worthy, and am having a bit of trouble coming up with a good chord progression. I'm not worried about melody, I have something worked out that can be changed around depending on what I've got underneath it, but that's where I'm lacking. Help?
