  1. I also think it's interesting the the Waves plugin is able to keep using CPU even when the track is turned off in Logic, but if I delete the plugin (whether the track is on or off) the CPU drops to 0.
  2. If anyone cares I discovered the Waves CLA Guitars plug was to blame. Took that one out and Logic seemed to behave normally, put it back and CPU jumps and stays there even when nothing is playing.
  3. I noticed that on another project my CPU levels do return to 0 once I stop playing. Maybe it's the plugins I'm using on the suspect project... lots of Waves stuff in there.
  4. That's interesting, thanks for the feedback. I noticed on mine that I can load a new project and the CPU is virtually nothing, then I hit play, even with all the tracks set to OFF, and the levels jump (like what you see in my screenshot). From that point it doesn't matter what I do, whether the track is playing or not, the levels never return to near 0, where they started.
  5. I was trying to save some CPU by using on/off instead of mute and found that there was absolutely no difference, my CPU meter stayed just as active when ALL tracks were off as it was when all were on. Here are the 2 screenshots. Seems strange.
  6. Just thought I'd ask this here since I can't seem to find an answer anywhere. I just bought a 2nd 8Pre so I could have an extra 8 inputs. I've connected them with an optical cable and they all work great (no need to create an aggregate device), the weird part is that I've now got 18 inputs in Logic as opposed to the expected 16. The inputs on the 1st unit come up as inputs 1-8 and on 2nd unit come up as input 11-18. Not sure what inputs 9 and 10 are. Anyone had an experience with this? Just curious. Thanks, Doug
  7. It's ok to have samples (because these generally get loaded into RAM) on the system drive but you want the audio that you are recording and playing back to be on a separate drive. In other words, save and run your Logic projects from another drive. I use the system drive (since it's 500GB) as a backup for my audio projects but always run them from the external.
  8. I've got this drive, swapped it out myself into my MBP about 2 week ago. The most intensive thing I've done is run the Lily Allen and The Killers demo songs (from the system drive) and it's worked fine. I'm still on 10.5.8. Is this only being seen on 10.6?
  9. I get the same behavior here, I think it's to be expected, I think it reads/writes in bursts. I'm sure you know this but you should really be running audio on a separate drive, especially if you're looking at 20 audio tracks. Puts a lot of strain on the system disk.
  10. That's where I put them and they work fine, really nice !!
  11. Not seeing that here... if anything I'm getting much better CPU efficiency. When Logic is up and idle I show about ~14% usage in Activity Monitor. Do you have a lot of plug-ins on record-enabled tracks?
  12. Here's a link to the company that makes the breakout boxes. http://www.duetbreakout.com/ Not cheap, but definitely worth it if your breakout cable gets a lot of use/abuse. Mine is pretty much stationary for the most part but I hear the breakout cable wears out rather quickly. As far as why it gets so highly recommended... you really have to hear it for yourself. In my opinion, it's more than worth it. Also, the balanced/unbalanced issue is really only an issue if you're dealing with really long cables that over lap or run near power lines, etc. My iPhone very often sits a few feet from my Duet and I've yet to hear any cell phone related interference (though I know exactly the sound you're talking about). Come to think of it I haven't heard that sound once since I went from the 1st gen iPhone to the 3GS... may not be coincidence.
  13. I've got the Duet and immediately noticed a hue upgrade in sound quality over my Motu 8-Pre... even just playing mp3's in iTunes. Also, as far as the balanced/unbalanced thing you can buy a 3rd party breakout box that is balanced and eliminates the need for the mess that is the breakout cable. I plan on getting one when I've got the cash.
  14. Not having that problem here. Have used Save Setting As to save a number of pedalboard configs.
  15. I think if you look around this site you'll find a lot of evidence of Logic's instruments being used on real commercial tracks. I may not have the golden ears that some do, but to me, the track you hear on the artist's website (and on the CD) is the one in the Logic demo (minus mastering), software instruments and all.
