Re: Gear Grotto [YouTube channel]

Thanks!

I don't know what the third video will be about, but probably not another review for the time being since I've already done two.

Re: Gear Grotto [YouTube channel]

But, are the differences between active and passive monitors when they use potentiometers versus precision matched switches perceptible to the human ear? This difference is clearly audible to you and me and probably anyone on the street, but it depends on the output level. The stereo tracking is th...

Re: Gear Grotto [YouTube channel]

Thanks! That's a good question. By keeping these brands undisclosed I avoid making people who own them sad or perhaps pissing off people who've bought the expensive models  The first one should be easy to guess, though. There's nothing legal that keeps me from mentioning exactly what those cont...

Re: EQ phase meter recommendation

You send to the app via AU NetSend plug-in so I'm sure you can set it up on individual aux'es. Haven't tried, but I could give it ago later today. Thanks lagerfeldt that would be hugely appreciated! Just a stereo network I/O, so you'll need to move stuff around and it'll be a hassle. In any case, Spectre is a great program if you need excelle...

PDC broken with external side-chain

Plug-in delay compensation is not applied to the side-chain routing which means that signals drift out of sync and vary depending on how many plug-ins have been applied to the track(s). Turning off plug-in delay compensation can make some tracks sync again while the rest of the mix will drift radica...

Re: anyone heard of this Mac company?

At the bottom it says "Visit our eBay store", but eBay says: Sorry, this shop does not exist. They have a typo in their own address. Looking at Trustpilot the place has no reviews. They say they've existed since 2013, but the website was created in 2016. I can't find any registered company...

Re: Mac Antivirus?

Anything that's running in the background is a potential load on the CPU or stability, yes, especially if it's a third party app.

OS X already has a built-in firewall: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201642

Re: Getting mix to cut through crowd noise

It's hard to tell exactly what's wrong in your case, but it's not necessarily, quote "the frequencies [not] cutting through the room". It could be that it's overproduced, i.e. too many simultaneous and overlapping elements. Keeping things real simple with the focus on the beat and a fairly...

Re: Mac Antivirus?

20 Macs over the years, most of them connected to the Internet. Never had a virus, never had any anti-virus software installed, never personally seen a virus or piece of malware on a Mac. PC users have been saying since 2000 it was only a matter of time, but here we are in 2018 and it's still not a ...

Ah yes, well then a target of -11 LUFS (I) could be way too high. Let me know when the track's out on Spotify!

Re: Mastering close to 0dB - is it bad?

Thanks for the feedback lagerfeldt. The 1 that peaks at -0.4dB True Peak/ISP was done by an online friend of mine and the 1 that peaks at -0.1dB True Peak/ISP was done by a rather well known online mastering studio. I was under the impression that we were talking about the same mastered version and...

Re: Mastering close to 0dB - is it bad?

I have 2 masters of the same audio - 1 was mastered with -0.4db True Peak/ISP & 1 with -0.1dB True Peak/ISP. They sound slightly different, the one with -0.1 dB has a little bit of 'oomph' to it. The extra "oomph" might simply be the extra perceived loudness or peak energy. A 0.3 dB d...

Re: Gear Grotto [YouTube channel]

Happy New Year!

There's a new video out today:

Gear Grotto - 2400 Audio Imperium Monitor Controller

It's a in-depth review of the Imperium monitor controller and an interesting look at passive versus active monitor controllers.

Re: What a compressor's threshold actually means

1. Only audio above -6dB will be compressed? Yes. Once the signal falls below the threshold, it is no longer compressed. Actually the signal will still be compressed even though it falls below e.g. -6 dBFS, unless the compressor has an infinitely quick release time. :-) What falls below -6 dBFS is ...

Re: Which Mastering Software

As I understood the question Ozone won't fit the bill as you're not able to edit tracks, create, export and import DDP files, etc. Henrik, it sounds like you should take a look at Wavelab Pro from Steinberg: https://www.steinberg.net/en/products/wavelab/start.html You'll need to install VST versions...
