Re: EXT drive for library: What Quality Required? Topic is solved

OK - any SATA drive (6gbps) connected to a USB3 adapter (UASP) is fine. HD video is easy on drives. It all depends on just how much video you are going to do. Basically, if you video, spend more money... $60 SSD, $10 enclosure is the "cheap" image..."expensive" $100 SSD, $80 encl...

Re: EXT drive for library: What Quality Required? Topic is solved

Just a quick performance note - internal M1 SSD speed - MacBook Air 1TB - Black Magic Disk Speed Test - 1GB files Write - 3,647 MB/sec (that's 3.6 GBytes/sec - almost a DVD in 1 second) Read 1,815 External USB3 SSD - Write 300 MBytes/second, Read 287 MBytes/sec The external drive is fine for almost ...

Re: Using Logic Pro through external SSD/Hard Drive(HDD), what file system to use?

not really Time Machine - but - I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my drives every night. The target/destination drive is typically a 4TB HDD which I have APFS formatted with a separate "volume" for each of the drives I want to clone. Works great. Of course it does take a moment or 6 to mou...

Re: Projects vs Folders???

A 'package' is a folder. It is treated like a file in the case of the Open command (double-click). If you remove the '.logicx' extension from the 'filename' the folder will lose it's fancy icon and behave like a normal folder. If you want to access the contents of a package in the Finder you control...

Re: Going from Rosetta to Native with Logic

I have been running Logic in Rosetta mode, but trying again to see what happens. KORG M1 seems to work just fine as a software instrument. Added some Waves - Scheps Omni Channel with an H-Delay included - no real issues. What I see as far as the system is concerned is the 'AUHostingCompatabilityServ...

Re: Deleting unused files

I do live band recordings like this - record each set as an individual set of files (typically an hour), start a new recording for the next set. It works for more than an hour, but I don't like trusting everything in a 2+ hour WAV file - just me. For each song I create a marker and and regions on ev...

Re: External SSD drive

I'm a member of the lower-cost SATA SSD drives + USB3 case. I use them for backups and longer term storage as well. At some point (when prices get better) I will be using an OWC Envoy Express enclosure (1500MB/s) and fast NvME SSD - a 2TB drive can hold everything that I use and need. Carry the driv...

Re: Adjusting height of mixer elements?

hmmm - db-Linear? I just watched the little display above the fader as I moved it and got the .1 increments, but I work in Exponential mode - anything below -30 dB is dead to me ;-) got me some gates ;-)

Re: Adjusting height of mixer elements?

The size of the fader does not change - only the scale - in db-Linear -60 to 0, exponential -30 to 0. When I use my trackpad to adjust the fader I see the increments at .1, no matter which version of the scale is by the meter. The steps on the scale are the levels, the fader adjusts from -infinity t...

Re: Not enough Thunderbolt 3 ports...help!!

7 USB-A devices (when using typical MIDI and audio gear is USB-2) is about 4 GBPS, plus an HDMI port running between 10 and 18 GBPS - so like maybe in some crazy world, 22GBPS constant. The TB3 port can do 40GBPS. That NvME SSD completely depends on the controller interface. For practical purposes o...

Re: Not enough Thunderbolt 3 ports...help!!

a half speed Thunderbolt port is not compromised in any way compared to a USB 3 port (or less)
how many gigabytes per second to you have to move ;-) ?

Re: Cheapest machine that can run Logic Pro X in 2021

USB hubs - I use an OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock in the studio - I can plug it in to either my iMac (Catalina) or the MBA (Big Sur) everything works. In the studio the MBA typically connects to an Anker 8-in-1 USB-C hub (powered) with an Ethernet port - that's the network connection. For on the road I use...

Re: Cheapest machine that can run Logic Pro X in 2021

I have an M1 MacBook Air (I replaced an older MacBook Pro). All of my USB peripherals and interfaces work fine with the M1. Most of my third-party plugins and instruments work, but all of it happens with Logic in "Rosetta" mode. In emulation the MBA outperforms the old quad-i7 by a signifi...

Re: M1 Mac mini... Isn't great or what!!

NB the KORG Legacy apps (I use my M1 a lot) are Intel binaries, and I assume the plugin is as well. All should be good if you run Logic in Rosetta mode.

Re: Control surfaces?

My absolute favorite control surface is my iPhone. I run Logic Remote on it and can control the recording process over by my mics and instrument without having to push buttons on the computer. Beyond satisfying - makes things so easy.

Re: Removing Silence -- Performance?

Region-less. If there is a region the audio (even if super quiet) gets passed through the processing chain. No region? No processing.

Re: Still torn between M1 Air and Pro

My choice was simple - MacBook Air - no fans - that was always a hassle for me (noise) - the performance difference between the MBA and MBP is small, and my new MBA almost matches (or exceeds) my 8-core i9 - soooooo. MacBook Air for the "always quiet" win.
