jasonmnash043
Hi I have a sample in logic sampler that slices up the sample and am trying to place these randomly but not sure how to achieve it. Would it involve using the logic arpeggiator? Any advice greatly appreciated. thanks Jason
David Nahmani
Hi Jason, we need a little more information. What kind of samples are those: one shot drums? When you say randomly, do you want random slices? Played at random times, no matter what the resulting rhythm is?
jasonmnash043
Hi David Thanks for getting back to me and apologies for being vague. No, i'm basically wanting to do something like this video at 12minutes in. In this example he uses an arpeggiator to play slices which i assume is done randomly. When i try this in logic the arpeggiator just plays the same note (or an octave up). Hope that makes more sense? I'm basically wanting to discover interesting melodies by slicing a sample. David Nahmani
Then yes you could try using an Arpeggiator MIDI FX on the Sampler track. Have you tried that yet?
ozinga
Hi, If you only press one key only that slice will play. In Piano Roll draw long notes (2-4 bars or as much as you like) for each slice on top of each other and set the arpeggio midi fx to random setting, try variation 1-4. jasonmnash043
Okay thanks both, that’s works. I recalled reading something called round robin a while ago and thought that was triggering different slices with the same note - think I must be confused so will read up on it. Thanks

Thanks Round Robin does allow you to trigger random samples with the same note, it's often used to avoid machine gun effect when playing rapid succession of drum notes such as snares for example.
