Logic Pro book by David Nahmani (Apple Pro Training Series)

Hi all, new here. Hopefully David or someone can help me out (or move to the correct sub-forum)...

I am on page 276 of the LPX 10.5 book (Chopping Loops in a Take Folder). After I rename and recolor the tracks, I select them, and Pack Take Folder. Once I do that, all the colors change to brown, so I cannot easily tell which track is which. I CMD-Z all the way back, and it still behaves this way. Rebooting doesn't help.

Is this something that changed in 10.6.x? If so, I'm sure there's a new way to handle this, but I don't know what it is. Sure could use some help here.

I am on 10.6.3, and Catalina.

Thanks

Hello evansky, and first sorry if I didn't originally find your question.

I'm in Logic Pro 10.7.0 now: I tried it and it seems to work as described in the book. I fired Logic Pro 10.6.3, tried it there and it seems to work as described in the book as well.

Moreover, I wonder why the colors would change to brown? Isn't your take folder blue when closed?

Feel free to add some screenshots so that I can see what you're seeing. How to attach files to your post

You could also try the process in a new empty project.

If all else fails, pack the take folder first then use the color palette to color the takes once they're inside the take folder, as a workaround.

Hi David:

Thank you for getting back to me! I recorded the process, but I guess I cannot upload a video (or maybe just .mov?). Attached are 3 screenshots of before, during, and after. This is with no manipulation other than packing the take folder. Looks weird, right?

I'm sad to hear that it's just me, and not a known issue. You'll never figure it out! :)

(Oh, right...try it in an empty project. Great idea!)

Thank you for your time, and the great book!

P.S. Are you still in Los Feliz? I'm in Silver Lake. I think you had your studio on Hillhurst, maybe...?

Haha not far I used to be on Grace Ave just north of Franklin Ave but ... that was a bit over 20 years ago! Then I built a studio in North Hollywood and stayed there for years before moving back to France a few years ago. :)

It's possible that the behavior you're getting is due to different preferences: choose Logic Pro > Preferences > Display, and under "Tracks" make sure that you have Region Color set to Individual?

Yeah, they are set to individual. And doing the exercise in a new project gives me the same results. But, the tip about coloring them after packing is helpful. It is showing me that the "takes" are already comped based on the end of the 2 measures of brass being the divider (if that makes sense the way I'm explaining it).

Anyways, I think that you've been very helpful, and I appreciate your time. This should be enough to let me continue with my lessons.

BTW, on FB, I'm Evan Evan BoBevan. We recently exchanged pleasantries when you announced the sale pricing of your book.

Merci beaucoup et bon nuit!

Just tried it, there's a project setting that seems to make this happen; When "Auto-colorize takes" in recording settings under "General" is checked, I get the "brown takes issue", while having it unchecked keeps the colors of the takes as is...

Confirmed! Same here. That must be it. Wow you're good Jakob!

Now who decided to put that setting as a Recording project setting vs a Display preference??

That's weird, I agree.. It also doesn't behave in a... logic way  When using take folders as recording option, it colorizes the takes nicely, while it makes nicely colored takes go brown if you create the take folder from separate takes after the fact... And thanks for the kind words :D

Jakob, you're a genius! Maybe you should write a book! ;)

Thank you both for the help!

Oh I just realized you must have meant my Logic Pro Help training space!! That was located on Vermont, just east of Hillhusrt before I moved to downtown L.A. on Wilshire. Still that was ... aeons ago! Or at least that's what it feels like. What a trip down memory lane! :D

You're welcome :)

There are geniuses here on the board for sure, but I'm definitely not one of them, and no writer either :D But thanks anyway :D

Hi David:

I think it's probably easier for me to break this into pieces.

First: After I pack the take folder, the folder appears to be broken into two halves, based on the end of the 2 bar brass section. Maybe this is right, but the pics in the book don't reflect this. pack.thumb.gif.107baf75b5aa257049aa4651c86d83ea.gif

Next, you say to expand the take folder to 2 bars. But the whole take folder is already 4 bars. So, I assume you mean to double it to 8 bars. That's cool. After I do that and expand the folder, it looks like this; 2_bars.thumb.gif.0b899a900eb04d7f3e459846b6d9bdc3.gif

LOL, don't worry, there's more after this! :) But, this is a start.

As always, appreciate the time!

Hi Evan. Yes, the result you're getting is right. The pics in the books don't reflect this because you don't open the take folder at this point, not until step 17 (page 277) which is after you've resized the take folder to two bars long.

Next, you say to expand the take folder to 2 bars.

In step 16 (page 277) you're instructed to resize the take folder so that it's two bars long. If you look at the help tag in the pic in that step you'll see that the resulting length should be 2 0 0 0 (exactly two bars).

But the whole take folder is already 4 bars. So, I assume you mean to double it to 8 bars.

That's where you went wrong, you don't want to expand the take folder, you want to shorten it so it's 2 bars.

LOL...I cannot apologize enough. A complete blonde moment on my part. I saw "resize" and my mind plugged in "expand." I promise to do better going forward...

Thank you, as always...

Haha no worries Evan and you're welcome. In general for editing operations like moving, copying, resizing, I try to show the help tag visible on the screen captures so that you can compare what's on your screen to what you see on the image in the book. But yes, those mistakes happen to all of us. Don't hesitate if you run into anything else while working in the book. :)

Apple is releasing new versions too fast here. I got the book for 10.4 and has only worked my way through 1/4 of it… by the time I buy the book for 10.7 they will have released 10.8.

Apple- please take a step back and squash all the bugs instead. Then we can catch up

And thanks for all your great work David. I would have reverted back to Reaper and wasted the money I payed out for Logic if it wasn’t for you.

 As a book author, I agree that it's not always easy to catch up.

However fear not, most of the material in your 10.4 book is still perfectly valid for 10.7 and you should be able to follow along just fine I think. I would recommend you continue working with your 10.4 book and if you bump into issues while trying to perform some of the steps in the exercises, or can't find something, start a new topic in the forum to ask for help. :)

Hi, awesome book! I completed the version 10.3 (I think) a while ago. I was wondering whether is possible to use the Logic Pro Book 10.5 with the current version of Logic 10.7 (as of today 01/17/2022). this is for an educational program and unfortunately our IT department upgraded Logic from 10.6 to 10.7, and students already purchased the text (10.5). Or is it possible to go back from 10.7 to 10.6? How? though we would prefer to stick with the current 10.7 as the process would take too long for us and the semester is about to begin. Thanks so much for your help!

Any news on a 10.7 book coming out anytime soon?

I am working on it. It should be out within a couple of months. It won't be very different from my 10.5 book — it's basically the same content plus a new lesson on Dolby Atmos mixing.

Looking forward to it! I worked through your 10.4 book and it was the best introduction to using Logic. It’ll be good to refresh myself (and learn a bit about playing around with Live Loops at the same time)

Do you have plans for a 201-style book?

Thanks David. I bought the Kindle version so that I could use it onscreen at the same time as Logic as well as be able to use it on iPads, which is great. A hard decision because I much prefer to read a printed book, which was the format for my 10.3 version. Oh well, isn't technology wonderful

I will look forward to some response from Amazon/Peachpit if you get one. Thanks.

I am enjoying your 10.5 otherwise of course :D

Zwonderer, 4 years now and I am still baffled and confused at times! The real secret is probably constant, regular practice like most things. There will always be certain features and aspects of any program that one rarely needs or uses and these will probably remain a mystery. However, I am able to use Logic to create and record music and that can be achieved very quickly at a basic level. David's book will certainly get you started and with time you can learn the more complicated features.
