Audio stopping randomly

Hello,

I recently upgraded to Sierra so that I could update my Logic Pro X to the latest version. Prior to this I was using Yosemite with no issues. No when playing a project the audio will stop at random places.   The play head continues to advance but no audio comes out of the speakers. Sometimes, the drummer regions will start playing again, but not always, and not for very long.  Stopping and starting again will get me audio, but usually out of sync, at least for a few bars. Sometimes it re-syncs, but the audio will stop again shortly after. This behavior happens on any project (so far), but I have been able to successfully bounce a project with no gaps in audio. I've only tried that once, but I assume it would work again.

 

I have no 3rd party plugins on the project I'm working on, however there is an iLok USB stick in the computer for some of my plugins that I own, but none of them are on this project.

I'm getting no error messages of any kind.

The CPU/HD meters are not showing hardly any load.

My audio buffer size is set to 128

 

This is driving me crazy, so if anyone has any idea what's going on, please let me know.

PS -  I removed the iLok to make sure it wasn't causing any problems. The audio dropouts continued without the iLok as well.

Just did a test. New project, drummer loop, and enabled a track to record guitar. Records for a few measures, then a glitch, and the audio stops recording, but it continues in play mode. When I stop, it stops, but sometimes the drum loop will start playing on its own without the play head moving.

 

Just tested Reaper as well. It works fine with no audio dropouts.

Something's messed up on your computer. That doesn't sound right.

Have you tried a restart?

Maybe create a new user on your machine?

Thanks for the suggestion. 

I created a test user account, open the project in the new account, same behavior.

Maybe I should try uninstalling and reinstalling. Afraid of hosing all of my plugins though.

I would try disconnecting the X32 and using the built-in audio input and output for a while and see what happens then. 

It happens when using the internal speakers too

Do you have Garageband?

If yes, does it happen there as well when you record?

I do have Garageband. No, garageband does not exhibit the same behavior. It works normally.

What if you disable all 3rd party plugins from the AU manager in Logic?

Maybe there's one that is not compatible with Sierra? Regardless if you use it or not.

I disabled all non-apple plugins. The weird behavior remains. There are some plugins that start with AU manufactured by Apple, I left those enabled along with the ones native to Logic. All others were disabled.

Are you recording to a 2nd internal drive?

Do you save before you start recording?

I have a dedicated 7200 RPM drive that I use for projects, but have also transferred projects my internal SSD as well to test. Same problems in both situations. These problems are there whether recording, or playing back.

Very strange.

Have you tried trashing the preference file?

Yes, I did delete the plist, but there are quite a few things with "logic" in the name in the preferences folder. What all is safe to delete?

Also, I made a screen capture of the audio dropout if that helps. It's only one of the issues, but it's a big one. The audio drops out at the 23 second mark of this video.

just trash the com.apple.logic10.plist

 

And your video link is not working, takes you to the video manager list.

Are you using any midi devices ? If so, have you tried disconnect them ?

Deleted preference file again, still doing in. I do not have any midi devices connected.

 - I corrected the video link (I think) sorry for the wrong link.

Un-installed Logic Pro X (using the manage storage space in system profiler) then re-downloaded and re-installed. Same issue persists. This is frustrating.

Bounced all tracks in place to see if it was a software instrument causing problems. Problem still there.

Ok, quit everything you have going in the background. Even turn wifi and bluetooth off.

New session, arm a track and record. Do you have replace mode enabled? Saw it in the video. Turn that off as well.

So weird that Garage Band and Reaper both work fine, but Logic is going nuts.

What does the dialogue say? Unreadable in the video, very blurry

You have replace mode and cycle going at the same time? Why?

The dialog said "The Key or Key Combination  V has been assigned twice within the command group" or something to that effect.

 

Just tried quitting everything except logic, turned off Wifi and Bluetooth, new project, one track enabled, turned off replace, hit record, it recorded for about 2 seconds, then stops.

That was accidental. turned off both, same thing is happening. Edited October 20, 2017 by djeans

Do you have any controllers connected?

Currently, yes. A Behringer  Universal Control Surface, but I did not have it connected until just a few minutes ago. 

Just go bare minimum. No controllers whatsoever.

Looks like something external is making Logic stop.

I wish there was a log file to search in in logic to see whats triggering the stops. But I don't think that would explain the behavior in the first video, would it? Where the play head keeps moving, but all audio stops?
