crabbi
Hi, I want to get as close as I can to mixing on the go using my Macbook Pro. I have AKG K712 headphones to check the stereo image, but also need an active mono monitor to run directly off my laptop. It needs to be portable, flat response / true representation, though for a small speaker I'm guessing it will need a slight bass boost as I'm using sub bass. So not too many contradictions there.....Any recommendations?
fisherking
https://smile.amazon.com/Soundmatters-foxLv2-Pocket-sized-Audiophile-Non-Bluetooth/dp/B0030XNBHS/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1511385249&sr=8-7&keywords=soundmatters do you mean literallty mono, or one physical object to carry (but with stereo audio)? ...which seems to make more sense. i have a collab who has this, swears by it. there's a bluetooth version as well... crabbi
One physical object that would convert a stereo signal to mono. (Though I can set output to mono from within logic, I think ?). That speaker has pretty good reviews, trying to decipher it's a flat-response sound though....thanks.
fisherking
flat is gonna be tricky at that size... no really-small speaker's going to, for example, give you real low end. you'll need your headphones to hear that. but the soundmatters speaker seems popular with some actual pro engineers, for travel. and easy to send a mono signal from logic. why mono? just curious... crabbi
Just so I can switch from phones, (giving me full lush stereo effect), to mono which gets heard in all kinds of compromised situations (tv, small radio, pub/club etc). fisherking
seriously, it's almost 2018; where is there mono?? tvs are stereo, clubs play in stereo; what's a small radio? make a good stereo mix, then check in it mono (in speakers, or headphones) just to be sure it's ok (if you think you need to). i haven't checked mono compatibility in years.... triplets
seriously, it's almost 2018; where is there mono?? Excellent point. All stereo nowadays.
Eric Cardenas
All these bluetooth speakers everyone's kitchen are many times in mono. And are dance clubs really in stereo nowadays? That's crazy.
triplets
Hey, that's why we need to mix as hot as possible, brickwall limit to -6 RMS, so we can hear every digital bit in mono!

fisherking
from what i see on amazon, most of those portable bluetooth speakers have 2 drivers, so some slight stereo spread. either way, who mixes for those? maybe time to bring back aurotone monitors... (or just one aurotone monitor).
enossified
If you skip the need for flat, you could do what I do...just hook up an old cassette recorder I had lying around. That way I not only have mono but also the ability to hear a mix on a "lo-fi" speaker. I use three sets of monitors that I volume balanced and can switch between: 1. M-audio powered monitors 2. old Kenwood hi-fi speakers 3. mono cassette recorder speaker

(no, seriously, am asking); what does a mono cassette recorder speaker reference? even a $30 bluetooth speaker (probably the modern equivalent of a cassette speaker) will sound far better than tech from the 80s. anyway, for me, if a mix sounds good on my monitors, my akg headphones, and i check it on my macbook, or my iphone (which i rarely do)... seems like all the bases are covered...
