How transmit MIDI clock from middle of project?

Apologies for the stupid question but it seems like I can only send MIDI clock from Logic to an external MIDI device if I start the project from the beginning. If i start the project anywhere else, no clock is sent. How do I fix this?

What device are you sending to? MIDI clock is a very old spec. And in the early days, you did have to start everything from the beginning of the song.

As far as I remember, MIDI clock is just a tempo information. It should be sent as soon as you hit Play. No matter where the cursor (song position) is. It wored for me with Logic 10.x, for instance when I have a cycle where ever in the song. But it's a long time I used it, so my memory might deceive me

Yeah, I would assume this info would get transmitted regardless of song position but I can only transmit it if I start playing from the very beginning of the track. Really infuriating!

There should be a way to select transmitting MIDI song position pointer out from Logic, which I think will work as a jam/sync of sorts for MIDI, if you send it to an external sequencer. Or you should be able to start playback form anywhere and the external sequencer(s) will chase (assuming they work with MIDI song position pointer).

Song position can be sent with MTC (MIDI Time Clock).

 

MIDI clock is only a "metronome" for syncing tempo.

Still stumped on this one...anyone happen to know which setting I need to fix to get it to work?

Unfortunately, MIDI clock sucked 30 years ago, and as you are finding out, it still does. There is no song position, just a start mark and tempo. If you don't go past the start marker it won't start and it can ONLY play from the beginning.

 

Can you set it up with Midi Time Code instead?

How does one set this up with MTC?

Simply choosing "Transmit MTC" isn't doing the trick (and I turned off the "Transmit MIDI Clock" when I tried that).

Very strange, Midi clock is sent everywhere you start playing, there is multiple Midi messages, a start/stop command, a message sent all 48 ticks, a continue command, and a song position command. Each time you start to play at a position, Logic is sending a song position, start, and ticks clock.

 

You can setup some parameters under the project preferences in the "synchronization -> Midi" panel.

 

yes it's so odd. i wonder if it's an issue with logic pro 9?

i've tried every possible MIDI setting in the logic preferences but nothing is working...

Bumping this old thread as none of the MIDI parameter settings in Logic X seem to do the trick for me. Just thought I'd reach out again and see if anyone has a solution for this one.

Pattern Mode (Project Settings>Synchronization>MIDI) should do the trick.

In Pattern Mode Logic sends a 'start' command if you play from anywhere,

while in Song Mode it sends a 'song position' and 'continue' command.
