ct1
Hellogicians On PT, I used to have green, yellow and red (clipping). I now have 4, with orange added. Is orange acceptable on recording (or out of a plug (in post fader meter)) or should it be avoided ? My instant peak value reads -0.1, so I take it that anything short of 0 is O.K. Or is this orange colour sthg to be avoided ? Thank you.
David Nahmani
In theory, 0 dBFS is the highest level you can record at. In practice, if you have a sample that was encoded to 0 dBFS during recording, there's no way to tell if it should have been encoded to a higher value or not, so no way to tell wether or not you've distorted your signal. So anything below 0 dB FS (but not including 0 dB FS) is safe. However, if you're recording a live instrument, it has a certain dynamic, so if you see your levels going into the yellow or orange, it means you're getting closer to 0 dB FS, which could be dangerous IF you reach 0 dB FS. If you never reach 0 dB FS then your recording is not distorted. Hope that made sense.
triplets
I try to avoid orange and red. Just let it touch yellow on recordings.
