greatcob
I'm trying to record my bass using a Focusrite Scarlett solo gen2 (no drivers needed) connecting via USB to my Macbook on Catalina. Logic version is 10.4.8. The interface is picking up inputs and lights up accordingly, the Mac recognises it's connected (I can select it as my input and/or output device on Sound settings and within Logic) but it isn't picking up any sound either on Sound Preferences or Logic. Have tried deleting Audio Preferences on Mac, unchecking/re-checking Core Audio in Logic and restarting/reconnecting things in different orders. Seems the problem isn't Logic so much as the Mac itself not picking up any input audio, but I haven't got a clue as to why. I've had this problem for a while now so it doesn't just seem to be happenstance... Any ideas? (I have successfully recorded using another Scarlett interface (2i2 gen2) a while back but have since updated both OS and Logic I think- was a while ago so can't remember but definitely at least one of them...sorry it's vague) Cheers
greatcob
Forgot to add: monitor output on the Focusrite works fine, but no audio going into computer
triplets
Maybe turn off Direct monitor on the interface?
David Nahmani
Try not selecting the Scarlett as the input in your Mac's system preferences.
greatcob
Thanks for the suggestions, gave them both a try today separately and together, but still no audio detected in Logic or Sound Preferences. Also tried Zoom and it says this: Any clue as to what the problem could be?
triplets
Did you try input 1?
greatcob
Haven't tried input 1 yet, just waiting on delivery of an xlr cable. Anything else I can try in the meantime?
David Nahmani
Can you record with your Mac's built-in mic?
greatcob
Yep I can record with the Mac's in-built mic, just not with the interface
David Nahmani
Have you tried connecting the interface with a different USB cable, on a different USB port...?
triplets
Did you try connecting headphones to the scarlett?
greatcob
Thanks, tried both of those but still no audio detected by the Mac. With headphones out of the Scarlett I can hear my bass input, but the Mac won't let me play any other computer audio (mp3s, youtube etc) out of the interface (just refuses to play any audio, staying at 0:00 until I change the output to internal speakers)
greatcob
If I try to play a Logic project out through the Scarlett then the needle moves along but the sound levels appear at 0 on all the tracks and the master (not turned down but just no audio coming out)
David Nahmani
When you say at 0 do you mean at -∞ (no activity on the leds) on Logic's channel strips?
greatcob
Sorry yes- no activity on any of the leds

triplets
You going straight into a USB port? No hub?
greatcob
Yep just straight into USB port, laptop has USB3 which should be compatible with Focusrite's USB2 connection and as I say I've used it before with no problems
triplets
What about creating a new Admin account and testing it there?
MikeRobinson
That sounds to me like "grasping at straws." However, it might be worth peeking at the Console utility to see if there are any messages there. If "any piece of software" reacted adversely, it probably will have spit out a logging-message there. (It will be "programmer-speak ..." The Console is sort-of like Harry Potter's "Room of Requirement" ... the place where all things are hidden.) David Nahmani
Can you switch to the built-in speakers and hear anything?
greatcob
Just gave that a go now after your reply Triplets but no difference unfortunately
greatcob
Can you switch to the built-in speakers and hear anything? Can't hear any thing I'm inputting through speakers but can playback mp3s/logic files etc through the speakers as normal.

In there now, what sort of thing should I be looking for? There are some errors relating to audio but I don't know where to start...
David Nahmani
Is software monitoring selected in Logic's audio preferences?

triplets
Do you have Garageband? If yes, did you test it there?
greatcob
Do you have Garageband? If yes, did you test it there? No I got rid of Garageband. I have tried it in Zoom and receive this message
triplets
Why would Zoom tell you to restart your computer with username and password? You can just restart it yourself. Pretty invasive, don't you think?
