tripnikk
Hey all, I recently discovered the Modulator plugin in the midi fx and have been having a blast using that to modulate various parameters of audio fx. I can't believe I've been manually drawing in automation for some of this stuff this entire time! Right now I can get the Modulator to automate, say, the wet/dry mix on a reverb plugin when on an instrument track, but I can't figure out how to do the same thing for that same reverb plugin on an audio track since I can't use midi fx. Is there a way I can get it to work on audio tracks as well?
David Nahmani
Indeed a sorely lacked feature I'm afraid. One could use convoluted workflows with external instrument and internal audio routing software to work around this limitation (let us know if you truly want to go there) but I agree that it should be possible to simply use a Modulator plug-in on an audio track. tripnikk
Indeed a sorely lacked feature I'm afraid. Ah, ok. Thanks for the quick reply! I'm used to doing things manually anyway, so I'll just keep on keeping on.
David Nahmani
Or you could use an IAC bus to route the MIDI FX modulation data from an External Instrument track back to the audio track. Bit of a convoluted workaround though.
grrdjf
Totally agree that this would be nice. Three workarounds I have used, the first two are very simple: a) Stick the audio into a Quick Sampler. One shot mode. Now it’s a software instrument! MIDI effects work just fine. This is probably the simplest and lets you get on with your day. b) Step FX - not the same as MIDI fx, but pretty good for automating some things. c) Everyone’s favourite, if you really want to do this, do it thru the environment: Personally, it’s cool that we can do © but I’ve not encountered a situation where one of (a) or (b) wouldn’t work. Hope this helps!
cinningbao
Another way (the way I do it) is to - load an Instrument channel up, - stick a Logic Comp on, - set Side Chain filter to LISTEN and input from my Audio channel - set Audio channel output to No Output - put an ES1 in the Instrument Slot (you have to have an instrument for this solution), - then load up your Modulator and FX and modulate-away!

Thank you so much for this! I was searching google for a more than a minute trying to find a way to do this. I can't believe I didn't think of this! polanoid
As it wasn’t mentioned in this thread yet AFAICT, you can put pattern regions on audio tracks, so if square/triangle/s&h waveforms are enough for you you could simulate LFO modulation using the step sequencer
