plz help! can't hear part of track while recording on it

this is driving me nuts, im on the newest version of logic.

I record in sections, like if im doing vocals I do them one line at a time . or on bass for instance , Ill record a few bars for this part stop, then record a few bars for that part

but logic Is killing me!!!

if I have a prior part I've recorded on that track, and go to record right after it , it will mute it during the count in when it should be playing. I want to hear it and be able to punch in directly afterwards .. but for some reason logic silences the track before I record. ive been working around it using two different identical tracks but honestly its get friggen old and I know there is some kind of easy fix to this, but I can't figure out how to phrase the question in a google search to get my answer.
