How to start recording when keyboard key is pressed

Hi all,

is there a function which starts recording when I press one or more keys on my M-Audio USB musical keyboard? I remember being able to do this 20 years ago on Digital Performer so I'm sure it's in LPX as well, but I can't find the setting nor a hit on Google, as I'm sure it has a specific name which I cannot recall.

There used to be such a feature in Logic, it was called "wait for note", but it was buggy and was subsequently axed, years ago.

All you could do now is assign a MIDI key to the "record" command, however, if you do that, that specific key is no longer available to play a note... so...

That's crazy when you think about it, my old Roland MC-50 in the mid-80's could do that without any problem and we're now in 2021 and a simple feature like that is axed on an app like Logic Pro because they couldn't figure it out!! What was the funny slogan about eMagic a long time ago? "We make the impossible simple, the simple we're working on it" or something like it...

Well, yeah, but then, it may look simple on the surface but it certainly isn't under the hood, given that an app like Logic does not consist of just a two line LC-Display and a couple of buttons.

 

Would they have been able to figure it out ? With unlimited resources and high demand ? Yes, of course. With planned resources, a higher company purpose to consider and, sorry, near-zero demand ? No, of course you don't pour time and money into something, risking to break some other stuff as you go, with no returns.

how hard is it to hit record, play when you're ready... then, move everything towards 1 1 1 1...?

It's not that it's hard, it's just that it's a very common feature in hardware sequencers. I used it a lot when I had a Motif workstation. It's particularly useful when using an arpeggiator.

not sure i get it; if that functionality doesn't exist in logic, then it doesn't exist. but it's just as easy to set up a countoff, then hit a key on the first beat of recording.
