How to drive multiple instruments from one MIDI track?

Given one recorded or written MIDI part, I want to send it to multiple instruments. I found one way, using the MIDI environment window's Mixer pane; you can "cable" the output of one instrument to the input of another one. That output of the first instrument kinda acts as a MIDI Thru. So all the MIDI from the first instrument's track gets additionally routed to the second instrument.

Unfortunately this also sends through all the other control data like volume and mute. So if you adjust the volume fader of the first instrument, that adjusts the volume of the second one.

That's kind of suboptimal; I just want the recorded track data to drive both instruments. What's a good way to do this?

Thanks.
