Apple/Emagic mt|4 amt8 unitor8MKII 2021 USB MIDI Driver

des99
Message added by David Nahmani,

Go to the following thread for a discussion on Apple's newest Unitor driver, the Unitor Family Driver v3, compatible with Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3):

Recommended Posts

Ok, I tried this on an Intel Mac (Mojave) - not sure if the driver is ARM only, but I wanted to see what happened.

I removed the Emagic driver, and put the signed "magic" driver there instead, and powered up my AMT8.

Audio/MIDI Setup Utility does correctly add/see an 8-port "Unitor8/AMT8" device (with a generic icon) and it becomes active.

But I get nothing logged in my console at all with the word "magic" in it... is this stuff logged to a file? If so what's the file it's logging to?

I did not reboot, so I don't know if that's a factor...

Thanks again for all your work, mcng!

My Unitor Mkii is recognized in Audio Midi setup, and my connected modules are receiving midi notes. The LEDs light on the Unitor and they indicate data in and out correctly!

Sysex does not seem to be passed though, I can't send any patches in or out. Both MidiQuest and Edisyn try to initiate sysex handshakes but nothing happens. Not sure if you are filtering this out somewhere.

In Logic, I am able to play notes and it rechannels midi through to the correct output. But for some reason program changes aren't behaving properly - the units seem to respond but then jump right back to the previously selected patch! Not sure what is happening there, I will try to get down to the most basic setup to test. It may be something on my end or in my environment...

The biggest issue for me is that my RS442 chained unit is not recognized at all. :? When I have a chance to re-cable some things I can see if it will recognize both through usb... but for now my other 8 inputs and outputs are not seen. And that Unitor has my keyboards attached so I will be able to test input more thoroughly.

FYI I only have this and the Novation Mininova 2.20.0 beta midi drivers installed on my system.

MagicUSBMidiDriver.plugin

NovationUSBMIDIDriver.plugin

Thank you again - amazing progress... Please let me know if you want me to test something specific.

That might be expecting a bit too much from an adapted standard USB MIDI driver.

Good news is that it should be cheap enough to buy another USB unit and connect it that way - especially due to all the Mac users finding they're suddenly not working...

Yes - it works! My second Unitor8mkii is recognized though USB!

I am still getting funky behavior in Logic - stuck notes, program changes not working, etc, but I think I need to trash the environment or preferences and start over from scratch. I'll keep updating with my progress.

Trying to use it, but the system throws me an alert that it can't use the driver because the developer is unkown. I did try to codesign it, terminal gives me this message:

/Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers/MagicUSBMidiDriver.plugin: replacing existing signature

objc[1064]: Class AMSupportURLConnectionDelegate is implemented in both /usr/lib/libauthinstall.dylib (0x1ef28ec10) and /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/A/MobileDevice (0x114ab82b8). One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.

Hello speakerfood,

I don't see any relation with the late two messages and the driver.

You did not tell us what happened next?

Did you fully followed the installation process correctly?

hint: if you did, you wouldn't have codesign after getting an alert ;)

Thanks for the fast response. Yes, I think I followed the instructions correctly.

When I reboot, I get the warning the system can't use the driver because its developer is not trusted.

When I open AMT, I can't see the Unitor. Tried to unplug and plug it in, but no luck.

MCNG thanks so much for sharing your work on the 'Magic' Midi Interface Driver

I have done some rudimentary testing with the Logic's Musical Typing Keyboard and can confirm:

1. AMT8 Ports in AMS and Logic

2. I can change AMT8 ports in Logic and observe corresponding changes on the AMT Port Midi Out LEDs

3. When I get the chance I will load songs using multiple midi modules and test.

4. Is there anything in particular you want me to test?

Option to Notarize Plug-in Using System Preferences for those that don't want to use the Terminal app

1. Unzip and move MagicUSBMidiDriver.plugin to /Libray/Audio/MIDI Drivers/

2. Open Audio Midi Setup> Window Menu> Show Midi Studio

3. Click 'Ok' on the error message

4. Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy>General Tab

5. Click 'Allow Anyway' button, see attached image

6. Connect AMT8 and power on you should see the AMT8 in the AMS Midi Studio window

Thanks again for all your work in this!

Update on my testing -

1. The driver is able to distinguish between both units hooked up directly to the both USB A slots on my MacMini M1.

2. Input and output work on all ports that I have tested - hooray!

3. I am still getting stuck notes on occasion, and pitch bend and CC data comes through very spotty - the values jump all around and the change is not smooth at all.

4. Program changes do not work for me - tested with a few different bank change messages - don't seem to go in or out.

It seems like the data is being thinned out - no sure if this an imposed limitation for testing, or if it can't keep up, or something else. For example this is the data for a full up and down pitch bend via MIDI:

So a lot of data is lost there... may be the same reason for the stuck notes.

Please let me know if there is anything specific I can test for you - Thanks!

Hi there, I just bought an AMT8 a couple of months ago and tried to get it working on my M1 Mini.. And i Dabbled around with the installer provided by apple... got it to bypass the error and actually install the .plugin.. but since it installs the old driver it did not matter.. looking further into the files with in the .plugin i came to understand that apple has deprecated or moved some of the dependencies for the driver and that is where my scriptkiddie adventure ended.. But huray for the persistence and effort of MCNG anyway i want to try to implement the alpha into the installer if you dont mind..

Hey there,

It works for me... so far..

Just did a test run on a Mac Mini M1 16GB Logic 10.6. with the AMT on a 5m USB Cable with all my of midi devices plugged in ( which is a lot) thru usb and played around with MTS-ESP to Microtune my hardware and all of that seems to work fine. But it seems if it recieves Sync Messages, clock or MTC it interferes with the Notes on/off or velocity or ...?

Also I tried to make it work with Unitor8 Perfrences Panel of Karl Arnlund and it seems to be possible to change the patch but not to store it..

Hi there, i am also on a M1 mac, and trying to get the usb unitor8 mk2 to work. I also tried to follow the link, but the website link is gone, can anyone send the used driver again ? thank you very much in advance.

Something went awry on this thread  the original poster's posts are now missing. :( Let me try to contact the original poster who first coded the driver and see if we can get him to answer. Thanks for your patience.

Mmm weird… the poster mentioned something about the original coder asking the poster to politely to stop digging since he’s working for apple now…

Just got myself two unitors mk1 &mk2 to help developing… guess we c(sh)ould move on with what’s left behind though the poster mentioned it’s better to start from the ground up since some of the frameworks, libraries,… are are soon to be or already deprecated

Dess99 wasn't the original poster of this thread, the original poster's posts were deleted, I am trying to recover them. The idea that Apple may have asked the OP to stop this endeavor is pure conjecture.

David, maybe you know:

in his instructions, he says :

To be able to use the plugin you will need to Ad hoc sign it:

codesign --sign - --force --deep /Library/Audio/MIDI\ Drivers/MagicUSBMidiDriver.plugin

What does he mean by that ?

Sorry English is not my native language

What does he mean by that ?

The computer will not run a driver that hasn't been signed as a security measure.

So in these cases, you can self-sign the code - essentially you saying "I vouch for this code, it's ok to run it", and then the computer will run it.

That's what that terminal command does, it self-signs the driver so it will run.

i did Unzip and move MagicUSBMidiDriver.plugin to /Libray/Audio/MIDI Drivers/accepted it in Security & Privacy, so that is ok, but in midi app(even after reboot), i still can't add the unitor8.

Do you have any advice ?

Yes, you need to follow the instructions as given and sign the driver, otherwise it will not run.

Installed and it seems to work like magic >> Only i had to reboot twice.

First time i got the error message that the driver was not signed ,so i had to accept that in security settings.

Second time a pop up showed up to actually use the plugin.

Be sure to open also the MIDI Window in the Audio Midi Setup app as by default it shows only the Audio Window.

Window >> Show MIDI Studio.

My AMT-8 shows up in Cubase as in Ableton and sending normal midi works, only when i use pitch bend or another controller on the same port as where i have activated the SYNC then i get syncing problems (the midi parts that are playing start to slow down and can't catch up) ... basically if i place the sync on a unused port where no midi notes are playing then it works fine as the clock signal will be sent to all 8 ports...

On Logic 10.6.3 however it seemed that i could only select 1 port (if i have 2 midi tracks and try to select another port it automatically changes also the other port in the last made selection). Deactivating and re-enabling the midi ports under Preferences >> MIDI >>INPUTS solved this problem.

Tested the AMT-8 connected directly on USB port and with a 10 ports hub (powered), works both fine without any glitch.

I'm using M1
