silencia
I am very new to logic pro. Would somebody please tell me how to change the instrument names from Instrument 1 to (sax) or something? I have made a score, but I cannot figure out how to change the names. Thank You!
Kouly
Click on the track that you want to name in the arrange window. To the left, just below the tool box is an clickable arrow that opens up some settings for that track. Next to the arrow is the name of the track. Double clicking on that name will turn it into a editable name that you can now rename to your hearts desire. This will also rename the channel strip in the mixer window. Get Busy! David Nahmani
You can also Option-double-click the name itself, on the track.
stevenson
if you are planning to make a score that reflects the instrument names then you should actually rename the object that the midi track id playing. so if its "Inst 1" you should change the name of Inst 1 in the environment to be Alto Sax (or whatever). you can do this from arrange by clicking on the object name in the paramaters window on the left where it says "Inst 1". you can also rename the instruments in an instrument set. some tips: assign a key command for "create instrument set from selection" and, "open instrument set window". both KCs only work in score. if you select a few tracks and then open the score window, a new instrument set (literally a set of the instruments you just selected) will be created. opening the instrument set window will allow you to edit pretty much everything you can see. just try it. double-click on everything and change things. its really intuitive once you get to that part. another tip that will really help you understand how to score in logic is score styles. and here's the tip; each individual midi region in arrange can have its own score style with its own quantization level (a setting which defines the what the fastest note will be displayed as). that means on the same track or instrument, you can have as many score styles as you want. obviously there are many other things, but these 2 tips will really help you get a handle on how to use score. within a matter of hours. camillo jr
It's worth noting that both Kouly's and David's way of renaming amount to the same thing; you are renaming the audio object. One of the benefits of doing this is when you are creating new audio objects in the arrange, the names in the track list menu will reflect these changes, making it easier to avoid accidentally assigning different audio files to the same track. Another way of renaming the track is with command-double click on the track. This renames the subtrack which retains the overall object name. So for instance, if you are using the EXS for drums and you want to build a kick part on one subtrack, hat on another, you could name the whole track object "Drums" (option-double click) and then name the subtracks "kick", "hat" and so on. This is also useful for labeling alternate takes, pitch bend takes, etc, all of which can live on the subtracks which are different versions of the main audio object. Now I'm going to have to check out Stevenson's suggestions.
camillo jr
Hey Stevenson, I couldn't find the key com "create instrument set from selection" anywhere in the score area of the key coms nor could I find it with the search function. Is there another name for it? I'm running 7.1.1 I did find the instrument set window and the styles key com as well.

Plowman
At times, to keep things exciting, Logic names key commands differently than their counterparts in the menu. The command in this case is "Selection to New Instrument Set." The menu item "Create Instrument Set from Selection" should be found in Score / Layout as the second to last option. David Nahmani
At times, to keep things exciting, Logic names key commands differently (...) It's not often that I get a good laugh reading this forum, but this was definitely one of them. It's so true!
