Jfever
How is this best achieved? I want to reduce load on the system and chances of random quirky stuff happening. Do I: 1. Unplug time machine drive or 2. Disable the time machine service (turn "off") ? Thanks.

rickenbacker360
I never use Time Machine. I have a laptop. During the half year or so I tried to use it, it corrupted the backup 3 times. I have no faith that it works.

rickenbacker360
I don't useTime Machine but I DO use an array of 4 separate backup drives, some with partitions for "mirror" of drive(s) to be backed up. For all my backups, I use SuperDuper. I just had too much trouble to ever trust Time Machine again. No disrespect to triplets or anyone who relies on it. I've had a few Seagate hard disks die on me recently and now I no longer trust the brand, I wouldn't even consider using their cloud backup services, at least not now. But that's not based on a reasonable logical decision, more of an emotional decision, really. I've never used Time Machine because I never trusted automatic backup systems, but after I lost a couple more hard drives recently, I'm considering using Time Machine for the first time. In addition to cloud backup. You can never be too careful.
fisherking
time machine is fine, but i prefer a mirror of my mac's files; if i delete something from the mac, i don't need it on the backup. so i use carbon copy cloner, and run it after any important work (or weekly). works for me... Erik Cordes
Just turn Time machine off. +1 or unmount the Time Machine disk before it starts backing up.TM is a great backup tool, have used without problems since 2009.
