External drive options for sample libraries

Recommended Posts

After 7 years of using only the samples included with Logic on a MBP, I am switching over to a new 2017 iMac, and adding NI Komplete 11 Ultimate and Spectrasonics Trillian to my set up.

My plan is to host these libraries on external 7200rpm drives, in a OWC Thunderbolt 4 Mini.  My understanding is a Thunderbolt 3 -to-Thunderbolt adapter is needed to connect the USB-C port on the new iMac to the older Thunderbolt connection of the OWC T4Mini.

Does it make sense for each of these products to have its own external drive, or OK to locate multiple libraries on one external drive?  I could see maybe if a given Logic Project referenced both libraries and they were on the same drive, playback performance might suffer?

A third drive in the OWC will be dedicated to Logic Projects, and the 4th drive to my iTunes library.  It would be nice to locate Komplete and Trillian on one drive, if it won’t cause me issues done the road, to free up a bay in the OWC for future use.

BTW, I do not plan to do any RAID with the OWC enclosure. I have a separate RAID NAS solution dedicated to backup.

Thanks for any insights to this approach
