Drum Mix Question: Isolating Kicks from Overhead Mics?

Recommended Posts

I’m working on a track for which I’m combining kit pieces from 3 different plugins: Drum Kit Designer, a custom Ultrabeat kit & EZdrummer 2. I’m routing & layering each plugin’s kick to one subgroup, and it sounds great.

Both Drum Kit Designer and EZdrummer 2 have Overhead mic channels (which I have routed to a different subgroup than the kicks) in which the plugin’s own kick is audible, respectively. Would you take the kicks out of the overhead channels?

So far it sounds fine with the drums in the overhead channels so I might just be overthinking this. I wanted to solicit opinions from anyone who’s done this kind of thing with drum plugins before.

Thanks in advance.

i mean, if its sounds good it sounds good.

in a traditional drum recording kick is sometimes filtered out of OHs, sometimes it isn't.

If you're going for the "natural" drums, keep it to one plug and open overheads, if you're doing less traditional things, just do whatever sounds right.

Your reply and the drums both sound good, so I'll be leaving the kick in the overheads.

Thanks for your input.
