logicnoobie
I want to record my voice, but the only mic I have is my apple earbuds. Are there any mics that are cheap but work well for a beginner? Or can I just use my earbuds with a homemade pop filter and call it a day?
triplets
Nah, that's a waste of time. You gonna have to invest in an entry level vocal mic: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/C01--samson-c01-large-diaphragm-condenser-microphone Do you have an audio interface where you can plug this in? fisherking
or a usb mic (ie no need for an external audio interface)...? https://www.sweetwater.com/c981--USB_Microphones?sb=low2high
triplets
A USB mic is great if you know you never gonna record an instrument, just your voice.
logicnoobie
A USB mic is great if you know you never gonna record an instrument, just your voice. Whats the difference between a USB mic and a normal mic? Why can't you record instruments with a USB mic?
triplets
Why can't you record instruments with a USB mic? You can but a USB mic was designed primarily for talking or basic singing. Since it's both a mic and an interface it has to be close to the computer because of the USB cable. An electric bass or electric guitar needs an amp. Or an audio interface where you can plug in the cable and the amplifier is simulated inside the computer. You can record an acoustic guitar, but it will pick up the noise of your room as well. A mic and a separate audio interface will give you more flexibility. Does all this make sense?

MikeRobinson
"At least for the purposes of recording a 'scratch vocal,'" the built-in microphone of your nearby Macintosh might do a better job than your earbuds would. triplets
Ok, so you have a 2014 Macbook Air. When you wanna use your built-in mic you have to select it in Logic Preferences under Audio and Devices: Remember to use headphones when you record, otherwise you're gonna record the laptop speakers as well.
