Thelonia
Hey! So I’ve been clueless about something for a while now. Suddenly my recorded vocals sound wetter more roomy and also a little muddy although I’m recording in the same room with the same mic. I’m recording in the closet at home and the vocals have always sounded dry and clear up until recently. Could it be something with the preference settings that accidentally got changed? Someone who’s experienced the same thing? It’s not the mic btw because I bought a new one thinking that was the problem and the exact same thing has happened with my new mic (so to say the sound changed after a few sessions from dry and nice to muddy and wet). I know this is a long one, sorry folks!
Solution David Nahmani Posted August 2, 2021 Solution Share Posted August 2, 2021 Is it possible that your mic is positioned backwards, so that you're singing into the back of the mic instead of the front?
Thelonia
David! I can’t believe you nailed it just like that. Even though it’s an embarrassingly basic thing to be aware of when recording lol. THANK YOU so much for making and saving my day!!
David Nahmani
Great! It's actually quite a classic mistake when you start recording vocals. With most microphones there's a logo of the brand or at list a little colored disc to indicate the front of the capsule, that should be facing you when singing into the mic. MikeRobinson
Maybe they all should add this word: "FRONT!"
Thelonia
David, thank you for saying “classic mistake” it kinda makes sense and makes me feel a little less born yesterday when you put it like that . Mike, I could not agree more!!
David Nahmani
You're welcome. And if you ever feel bad again about making any silly mistake while in the studio, make sure you read the following thread which should help making you feel better: Have you Taken Your Logic "Stupid Pill" Today? Thelonia
How lovely . That is definitely something for me! Thanks!
analogika
My first thought, as well. There's a classic Kool & the Gang track (IIRC) recorded at the church in NYC that has an awesome, roomy drum sound on it — one of the overheads was mounted backwards by accident. I tried to find the anecdote — I'm pretty sure it's in the fantastic book "Temples of Sound - Inside the Great Recording Studios" by Jim Cogan and William Clark — and it wasn't K & the Gang, and it wasn't the Church. Ah well. Great excuse to re-read that book. Intent was to show that flipping a mic backwards happens in the best of houses.
David Nahmani
Intent was to show that flipping a mic backwards happens in the best of houses. Yes definitely. I agree. If you find the anecdote do post it here: I would love to know who it is and hear the recording.
fisherking
not exactly on topic, but am reminded of my cousin, who (many years ago) bought a kodak camera, and went to europe. she took lots of pictures. when she got home, and got the photos developed, they were all the same blurry image... as she'd taken every picture with the lens facing her. she showed them to us ("here's the bridge of my nose at the eiffel tower, here's the bridge of my nose at big ben" etc). she told me she'd thought it odd that the viewfinder made everything smaller...
