conanthewarrior
Hi everyone, I sought your advice some years back and ended up with a mid 2013 retina 15 MBP. It worked great for my needs, both electronic music and recording vocals and guitar with quite a few effects on each channel strip. I have been unwell after sustaining two serious head injuries last year, so have been out of the loop with things and see Apple are using their own processors now. My budget is around £700, I know it’s not much but I don’t have much money. What model would you advise as a replacement for my needs, and if I buy a older MBP will I still get software updates or not now Apple use their phone own processors? As I will also be using it for normal use not just logic as I could not afford another computer. Thank you for your help, Conan.
triplets
Hi Conan, I'm still using a 2012 non-retina 15-inch that stops at Catalina update wise. I still get securtiy updates here and there but Logic stops at 10.6.3. They are at 10.7.1 now with macOS Monterey. So if you get a used Intel machine, make sure you get a quad-core and 16 gigs of ram. If you want to be current with macOS Monterey you need a 2015 and up. conanthewarrior
Glad to hear that the 2012 model is still working well for you! I would just be a bit worried going for a model from then due to age and possible failure again. I would like to try and stay up to date, do you have any idea how long apple will support intel based macs now they have the M1 chip? Thanks again for your help, Conan. Solution triplets Posted November 13, 2021 Solution Share Posted November 13, 2021 Apple said the transition to M1 on all their products and software would take 2 years since the announcement. So the question is, what macOS version of the future will be Apple Silicon only. That nobody knows. So if you want to stay up to date, keep that in mind.
