Use Logic Remote without a shared Wi-Fi network

If you don't have a shared Wi-Fi network, you can still use Logic Remote on your iOS device to control Logic Pro X, GarageBand, and MainStage on your Mac.

To use Logic Remote 1.3.1 without a shared Wi-Fi  network, you can connect your iOS device directly to your Mac using a Lightning cable, or you can create a computer-to-computer Wi-Fi network between devices.

To connect using either of these methods, you’ll need the following:

  • A Mac running macOS Sierra 10.12.4
  • Logic Pro X 10.3 or later, GarageBand 10.1.5 or later, or MainStage 3.3 or later
  • An iPad or iPhone running iOS 10.3 or later, and Logic Remote 1.3.1 or later

Connect a Lightning cable

In addition to the requirements mentioned above, you’ll need a Lightning cable and iTunes 12.6 to make this connection.

Make sure to restart your Mac after updating iTunes.

To connect using a lightning cable:

  1. Connect the Lightning cable from your iOS device to your Mac.
  2. Open Logic Pro X, MainStage, or GarageBand on your Mac.
  3. Open Logic Remote on your iOS device.
  4. In the dialog on your iOS device, choose the Mac you’re connected to.
  5. In the alert on your Mac, click Allow to confirm and establish the connection.

 Create a computer-to-computer network

You can set up a temporary Wi-Fi connection between your iOS device and your Mac to use Logic Remote.

To connect using a computer-to-computer network:

  1. Create a computer-to-computer network on your Mac.
  2. From your Home screen on your iOS device, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and make sure Wi-Fi is turned on. Under Devices, select your Mac.
  3. Open Logic Pro X, MainStage, or GarageBand on your Mac.
  4. Open Logic Remote on your iOS device.
  5. In the dialog on your iOS device, choose the Mac you’re connected to.
  6. In the alert on your Mac, click Connect to confirm and establish the connection.

This is a great option for anyone who wants a solid, interference-free connection to their Logic Remote app.
Or for anyone using another iOS MIDI control app with MainStage/Logic. I use MIDI Designer Pro with MainStage and the inability to connect my iPad to my Mac for a simple hard-wired MIDI connection (without the need for third party server/client apps) frustrated me for years. No more!
