External Instrument plugin not showing any external devices

In Logic I can control an external MIDI instrument by using the External Instrument "Utility Instrument" plugin. When opened it has a list of all connected USB MIDI devices. It is much more convenient to use this method than to individually configure outputs in Logic as it handles MMC Play, Stop etc automatically

The same plugin is available in MainStage but when I try to use it, no instruments are displayed (see attachment) even though they are added to the Layout. Is anyone else able to reproduce this, or on the other hand tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Sorry, I think I misunderstood your answer. I know that I can create an external MIDI track, and indeed that is how most of my existing concerts are set up. Having discovered the External Instrument Plugin in Logic, however, I wish to do the same in MainStage.

Can you verify whether, if you insert an External Instrument instrument plugin on a Software Instrument track, you see the MIDI ports listed or not? This is what it should look like (attachments). Also the MainStage Instruments manual says it is supported in MainStage.
