Putting mp3s online STREAMING vs. NON_STREAMING?

I'm thinking I would like to put some mp3s of my music online to share but I'm not sure what's the best way to do that...STREAMING vs. NON_STREAMING?

It's kind of neat having tunes streaming in iTunes but doesn't that mean that whoever is listening is using up bandwidth on the host (which means this would be more expensive for me?!)...also how does the cross-platform thing come into play? Is any one format more widely accessible then another?

thanx PETE

Well I don't know what the heck is going on here...

I think by control-clicking the end user has a choice to d/l or stream, but looking at in iTunes though i see that my mp3s online which I downloaded back from the server have that little radio broadcast icon and an http URL in the info ..can anyone clarify this for me? Does this mean people are constantly going to be taxing the bandwidth on my server whenever they listen to one of these?

thanx PETE

BTW, here's some of my music online

I don't get a choice to stream your mp3, only to dl it, which is fine. Streaming is usually a pain to setup and you need to have some special software on the server side, whereas download doesn't require anything but your mp3 file.

The advantage of streaming is for visitors that don't have broadband connection, since they don't have to wait too long to start listening to your music...

An option is to use a Flash mp3 player such as this:

okay cool thanx for clarifying... David. That's what I wanted just to let people d/l the whole mp3, but I thought control- clicking and choosing "listen with iTunes" might be a choice for streaming vs. d/l

Selecting/ playing a song like this in iTunes with the little broadcast icon, you get a dialog alert box that says OPENING URL with a progress bar so it certainly appears that there's some kind of streaming going on...think I'll ask the guru renting me storage space :)

I don't know what happens when you open something like this in SAFARI

Well, after further research it looks like iTunes and Safari default to streaming vs downloading. ZIPping mp3s forces a download instead of streaming

File size compression is negligible and hopefully most people on both platforms have automatic unzipping apps installed...
