Piano Roll Tip

Fri Oct 30, 2020 11:44 pm

Apologies if this has been posted before but it's a cool little trick I like to use to make sure I'm always in key and to speed up overall workflow as well. Create an empty midi region, and then in the piano roll editor draw in the notes of a scale, hit the collapse mode button, and voila. Every key in your piano roll is in the scale you want to be in (in this case G# minor).

I created a mapped instrument for lighting control (programmed as a track within backing tracks for live play), with notes corresponding to various pre-configured lighting scenes. I use the same technique for the lights... decide which scenes I'll use for a given song, create dummy notes at the start, and then use the collapse mode to make it easier to enter events in the rest of the track.
