EXS expressive Instrument template

Recommended Posts

This is really nice for sustained acoustic sounds such as cello, violin, or flute. Try out the Bend + Mod wheels, aftertouch -they all do something.

You'll see that the Instrument haas an empty Zone -delete this if you want, it's only there because Logic won't recognise an Instrument with no Zones, I think.

Just add your own samples to the instrument - opening a second .exs editor and using copy all/paste is an easy method.

Pressing the sustain (hold) pedal changes the sample start point and attack envelope, which attempts to give a smoother , "legato" transition between notes. These settings will probably need tweaking as they depend on the samples you yourself use.

You'll see that the dynamic range (level via velocity) is very large -this adds to expressiveness but can make it harder to mix-reduce to your own taste.

There's more about this in a long post at Sonik Matter:

http://community.sonikmatter.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7048&hl=legato

which explains in detail what's going on. It's related to a different .exs instrument but all the principles are the same.

Hope someone finds this useful. It can really help bring your bowed and blown sampled instruments to life. The nice thing is, it works well even with very basic samples so you don't need the most expensive libraries to produce musical results.

Also, I find a lot of these newer plug-in based sample VIs a bit limited in their editing possibilites. Some of them are no pleasure to use- I just got the new Miroslav thing for instance and it has quite a few drawbacks. Exs24 isn't perfect, but it sounds good and does enable you to "get your hands dirty" and try to set things up the way you want them.
