drmusic13
What I'm using: Novation Launchkey mini midi controller, Logic Pro X I make a software instrument and before I touch my controller I get this big noise, not even a note but obviously from that instrument. What I can't figure out is what is making the noise on my controller, I haven't touched a key knob fader or anything and it starts blasting this sound, which is very random "gibberish" if you will. Anyone experienced this before or know a solution?
David Nahmani
What software instrument is inserted on the channel strip? If you bypass it, does the noise go away? if you turn it back on, does the noise come back?
drmusic13
It usually happens whenever I use piano's and synths, I have used drums and they work just fine. And whenever the keyboard is plugged in it makes the sound, when I plugged it out it worked just fine.
NickOverspill
Hey, Im having the same issue but with Novation Launchkey 61. only piano and synths everything else is fine, also one minute i have no signal next minute its back. things have always worked fine then all of a sudden boom, big probs cheers nick
David Nahmani
What happens if you bypass the software instrument plug-in then turn it back on?
NickOverspill
no difference I'm afraid. still acting very strangely. im guessing its since the iMac update

NickOverspill
yeah dude, pretty much that. once or twice however the the mac has even failed to realise there is a midi keyboard connected. at first thought there was a problem with the usb ports, but I've checked them and all seems to be fine. mainly just the problem like you said cheers
David Nahmani
no difference I'm afraid. You still hear the noise even with the instrument bypassed?
NickOverspill
this is a bit strange, when i hit bypass it makes the noise only much shorter, then its fine. but when i take it off bypass its back. if that makes sense Nick
David Nahmani
And that occurs the same way with any software instrument? I would contact Novation to see if they can help you, maybe they're aware of the issue.
NickOverspill
only really piano and organ creates this noise. though the general erratic-ness is a constant. I've tried contacting Novation, not proving too good so far. tough to get an answer out of them
David Nahmani
And you don't get that issue if you turn off the Novation and use for example the musical typing window?
NickOverspill
yeah its fine that way, no problems at all
David Nahmani
If you use the custom LCD display, you can see what kind of MIDI data is sent to Logic by the Novation. I would check to see if there's data other than the note on events being sent?
NickOverspill
yeah it continually flashes: 1C - 2 127 > no in 1C - 2 0 > no out just keeps flashing between them 2 messages, for in and out hope that makes sense
David Nahmani
Yes, that's some kind of aftertouch data that the controller is sending. Normally that data is sent when you continue pressing more or less after hitting a pad. So what you now need to figure out is how to set up the Novation controller so it doesn't send that data. Has the Novation always behaved like this? If not, you could try some sort of factory reset if they offer one.
NickOverspill
used it without problem for 4 or 5 weeks (since i got it) literally switched on the next day and it started doing this, don't think i have any kind of reset option, is there one in Logic that would basically make it think I'm plugging it in for the first time? I've just noticed some channel strips now say 'controlled by HUI' that seems new, is that connected to this problem? cheers
David Nahmani
Logic couldn't prevent the Novation from sending those messages, but it could filter them out. One thing you could try in Logic is to choose Logic Pro X > Control Surfaces > Bypass All Control Surfaces. Then see if the Novation behaves as expected? NickOverspill
yeah thats stopped the confusion going on with the LCD display, but now obviously no input or output just the built in keyboard piano that works
David Nahmani
but now obviously no input or output just the built in keyboard piano that works I'm not sure what you mean. You should be able to use the controller to play notes even when bypass all control surfaces is selected.
NickOverspill
i see what you mean but no nothing, its as if theres nothing connected to my mac. lights are on but nothing happening
David Nahmani
Check your keyboard documentation for various settings, make sure it acts as a normal MIDI Controller and not a control surface? It may currently be in some sort of control surface mode.
NickOverspill
I've just changed the usb port again and its working, thats 2 ports it won't work on now all of a sudden, but i can sort that, unless you know of a reason why it stopped working for those particular usb ports? anyway, once again ur a legend, cheers dude
David Nahmani
Wow good to hear it's now working! Not sure why some USB ports won't behave. Seems like a Mac restart may resolve that ?
