Workaround 80 vocal takes...

IRV

Recommended Posts

I'm working on a song of which the vocals are recorded elsewhere (protools). now I have my instrumensal takes (20 tracks) plus 80(!!!) vocal tracks. There are 10 different voices with each of them having 4/5 different pitches (so 5 takes per voice).

How would you go around this one in order to make the mixing process efficient?

THANKS!!!

Yep, folders like xs4is said.

Following from the PT model of takes, you might want to put the each set of five takes on subtracks of the same audio object - Track>create. That way, with or without folders, you can mute all five at once from the track mixer or individually from their subtracks. You can also just mute the whole folder.

For editing those takes you might find this set-up useful:

Screenshot with two horizontal Arrange windows, bottom one yellow linked.

When you select a folder in the top Arrange, the bottom one will show the contents of that folder and you can go in and slice, dice, mute and un-mute takes inside each folder. This saves a lot of double clicking to back in and out of the folders. Once you've packed the takes in a folder, you can delete the extra subtracks from your main arrange to save space; the subtracks will still show up in the folder.

If you decide to unpack a folder at some point and put all those takes back on the main arrange, note that the muted tracks inside the folder won't carry through when you unpack!

I had a similar situation recently. I recorded SATB, each section mic'd separately resulting in four tracks per take. I put all takes in a folder to keep them separate from the general population and then COLORIZED each SATB group according to the take number. The pic below shows how my comp looked afterwards.

Color can make life immeasurably easier than looking at a bunch of filenames.

Very important point!

So if you plan on unpacking and you have muted tracks within the folder, go through and mute the regions individually before unpacking.
