You can, but I don't recommend it. I always find that a major OS upgrade is a great time for a clean up. I would purchase a new drive, install the new OS, and only move to the new drives the files that you are still working on, moving the other to an archive drive.

 

But if you don't like that idea, yes, you can upgrade without losing anything. Still, you should have a proper backup of all your files before you attempt an OS upgrade.
